Help! Can anyone tell me what happens when this product is used two years past its expiration date? My husband says he's going to use it. I say there must be a reason for the expiration date.

Most likely enough moisture has chemically reacted with the material and it's going to result in a weak bond and weak material.

Don't do it! You'll be very lucky if it cures properly. The concrete in the stuff is made with heat driving the moisture out of the material, breaking the chemical bonds. The stuff really has an affinity for moisture, and is actually in a much more stable state once it has recombined with it. The stuff will suck any moisture it can, and what you may end up with is a sandy mixture of already cured concrete that won't hold together...it would be like mixing sand up rather than concrete. It's too much work to risk it and have to tear out and try again. Even if used before the expiration date, if it hasn't been stored properly, it may fail...it is always best to use it as soon as possible after being manufactured.

If it is dry and there are no lumps I wouldn't have any problem using it. I don't even check the dates on bagged goods.

It just so happens that recently I did use a bag of some similarily aged Ardex Feather Finish under a floating floor product. The mixing, troweling, setting time & sanding characteristics were very consistant with fresh Ardex. Ardex bags seem to have an exceptional skin and flap seal. However partial bags of new Ardex must be tightly clamped.

For a directly adhered walking surface I would not want to work outside of experiation dates.

Thanks to those who posted. Sounds like y'all have varying ideas, as well. My husband decided not to use the expired Ardex...better safe than sorry...Why risk the possibility of extra work? He just got a Henry's product from Lowes, skimmed it onto the plywood floor of our new Tuff Shed barn, and we laid the vinyl tiles shortly after. It's lookin' good! :tup2:
