A driver heading for Perth through the Outback was not fazed when a transmission failure blocked the forward gears of his vehicle.
Rather than call a mechanic he simply decided to continue his 310-mile journey - in reverse.
The 22-year-old was stopped by Western Australian police as they saw him doing about 40mph in reverse gear down the highway.
The driver, who was not named by police, has been charged with reckless driving and other traffic offences.
The man was apparently en route to the state capital, Perth, when his transmission failed outside a restaurant in the Outback town of Kalgoorlie, about 300 miles from the city.
Police said they stopped the man outside the nearby town of Coolgardie, just 12 miles from where his backward odyssey began.
A breath test for alcohol came up negative, police said.
But did they test for Roadkill stew and Grout sponge streudel??

Geez, that's easily explained Jeffrey...see when you're headin south outta Kalgoorlie, and the sun is in your eyes, you can easily think you're actually heading into Coolgarlie, but in reality if you go backwards heading outta Kalgoorlie is likebacking into Coolgarlie.......see?
I'm most curious what kinda vehicle he's got will got 40 mph in reverse.
And it sure as hell wasn't our company truck, it won't go that fast in high gear forward. :D

The article is obviously false. There is no such place as Kalgoorlie, and everyone knows Perth is in Scotland or some silly place like that. :D

Everyone knows that the company truck has a hybrid power-plant. Wind and Gas.
Albert provides the wind and Edna's cooking provides the gas. :x:

The company truck is not singular. Notice there is a fleet in that picture? All show room spiffy and ready to go. All requiring two operators, a driver and a brake man. Dave M. works the brake rock for the truck assigned to the engineering department while Bob Campbell navigates. ;)
Ahhh, and wouldn't it be music to the ol' ears to once again hear the familiar cry of, "Get the rock, Dave," at the end of another chapter in the life of whomeverthehell that detective was inna ol' Stankhammer novels. :yeah:
I thought Bob drove the truck.
Surely the Injineers' union don't allow nobody to drive and navigate, eh?
Anybody remember Joey Chitwood and them cars he had that would go forty miles a awr in reverse? Pewt on some fine shows, did he. :)

Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear.......The Lone Injineer rides again!
----------------------------------------
The lights coming back on startled him awake. Dave, his partner now, must have borrowed from his son Stanley's paper route money to pay the bill. His old boss,JB, had abandoned the business years ago and was working as a bottle boy at a local beer distrubutors. The two of them eked out a meager existence estimating tile jobs for hack contractors and itinerant home improvement companies.
Suddenly the phone rang. He hated how it always did that, never gave any warning. he picked it up and mechanically answered "You've got the wrong number" nobody ever really called them. Suddenly he sat bolt upright, it was she!.............to be continued by Mr Campbell
