View Full Version : Help! They left old adhesive? Thinset? on time

There is a hallway in my home that was tiled (ceramic)... it appears the installers didn't clean up the thinset? adhesive? The tile looks dirty and of course is getting darker as dirt/dust gets ground into it. I don't want to ruin the grout or the tiles. Is there anything that will safely, with some elbow grease, clean this stuff off the tiles? Thanks!!

Sure, try some plain old white vinegar/and water 50/50,and a scrub brush, or get some sulfamic acid crystals...and rinse well.

If you have areas where the thin-set is showing thru the grout, there is no way to clean it. Im just guessing there is since they didnt bother to clean it off the top. The areas of thin-set showing thru the grout need to be removed via a special grout removal tool available at Lowes. It needs to be removed down to atleast 2/3rds the thickness of the tile. Then proceed to regrout those areas.
