View Full Version : Grout stain on Saltillo...?!

I have a kitchen/livingroom saltillo installation that I am having trouble with. The tiles were sealed with a gloss sealer (one coat) before grouting. This morning I discovered that the haze and residue won't come off, not even with a green scotch-brite. Is there an acid that I can use to take this crap off? If so, do I need to neutralize the acid afterwards? It's not a thick heavy residue, like caked cement or nothing, just this dark grey stain, heavier in some places than others...

I'll move you over to the Cleaning, Restoration and Sealing Forum Hamlet.

From your post it's not clear if the tiles were sealed before or after grouting. A clarification on that point will be necessary. :)

Thanks, they were sealed before grouting. As an aside, I rummaged around in my garage and found some phosphoric acid. I splashed a little out on the floor, scrubbed it around a little, and rinsed/wiped it up with a wet sponge. This seems to take 98% of the stain up. I'm guessing this is my solution...

Sulfamic acid crystals, or vinegar and water 50/50 would be better and less caustic.
