We moved in to a new home with a beautiful tumbled travertine tile shower. It's awesome. However, after a shower, water pools in areas where the grout isn't filled in enough and we get little pockets of mildew. We use a towel to wipe up the excess water but there must be another solution. I was wondering if I can put a small layer of grout over the top of the existing grout so that these pockets would be leveled out. I am thinking that a thin layer of grout would take care of this but I am also thinking that the grout, since it's so thin in places would simply crack.

Any suggestions out there would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi fleaf2, Welcome!

Please share a first name with us. :shades:

You need to remove the existing grout in the affected areas to about 2/3rds the depth to allow the new grout to hold properly.

travertine in a shower...you're brave!

You can add grout but it's unlikely to bond long term, especialy with being used in a shower.

As stated above you need to remove some grout. For a one time deal, get the grout rout tool that home depot sells - triangle tip and see if that works.

I noticed ponding in a tile shower where the tiles were laid at slight angles to form slope to drain. Not sure if that is proper installation? At close inspection, the tiles seemed to protrude at upper end toward pan edges just enough to hold water.

Would have worked well if the grout in center of those tiles could have a slight slope toward lines to drain. After cleaning, the long term ponding caused the grout to decay, crumble, or crack. I simply filled the cracks level with tiles to make no longer hold the water. Did not look out of place.
