Help, We have a stall shower that has now been regrouted twice and the grout continues to fall apart and ultimately come up from the shower floor.

I have not done the job myself - but I am going to regrout it. What are the steps I need to follow to be sure this does not happen again? Not wishing to sound uninformed, but what type of grout should I use and does sealing do more than prevent stains?

What time frame am I looking at for the grout to cure (or whatever it is grout does). If I grout on a Friday, will it be okay to use by Monday? Do I seal it before I use it? How many days should we not use the shower before I dig out the grout and regrout it? Do I need to remove ALL the grout or just remove a certain amount of the grout on the floor?

Sorry if this is so long, but as you can tell, I am kind of clueless on this but know it is something I can do on my own.

Usually grout does this because of movement in the tile job, or under the job.If this is on a mudbed over a wood floor, there could be problems with the wood floor,(like leak,or weak joist, or plywood)or the mudbed may not be adequate.Nothing you can do to the grout will fix these problems. To fix the grour, you scrape or cut out the grout, clean the floor up, redo the grout with sanded for larger than 1/8" joint, unsanded for smaller. Most sealers say wait 72 hrs. for grout to harden before sealing but some are different. You can use it a day after sealing.Basically.

If the shower pan is flooded becuase of, say, clogged weep holes, you will be trying to put a layer of grout over a lake of water. The moisture from the lake will keep trying to enter the damp grout and not allow it to ever dry fully.

So the situation will repeat itself.

If this is the situation, of course.

Possible, but not real common, is that maybe the grout is a bad batch. Are you using the same bag as before? If so, try a different one.

Demolishing the shower and rebuilding it come to mind....
