View Full Version : grout sealer issue
just curious, should water bead up on my sealed grout? I used Tile Guard 5 year Tile and Grout Silicone Sealer and after two coats if I flick some water on it..........it doesn't bead up. Should I apply some type of polyer or acrylic sealer. Would that seal it properly or am I just a little too anal? Thanks ahead of time!!! I've gotten great advice for my projects here!!!!

I take it this is the product you used, from Homax.

This is a water based silicon sealer and from your description tyl, sounds like it flat out isn't doing the job as advertised. I'm somewhat hesitant recommending one of the high-end sealers from StoneTech, Miracle, or Aqua Mix because of the silicon formulation of Tile Guard.
I'll move this question over to our Restoration and Sealing Forum - lets see what the gurus over there have to say.
:)
yes........that's the product. Hopefully one of those guys can help. Thanks.

Methylene chloride,in paint strippers is typically used to remove silicone, which if it hasn't completely dried may not be totally removed.Maybe you put it on too thick, or the grout was wet?But if it isn't working, there may be something else wrong,it may not be curing .I would hate to have to strip the whole thing with strippers, but i think it's either this or trying, another sealer over what you have, which like Mike i wouldn't think would work well.Aquamix, and many others sell strippers for this situation.Someone else may have better news.

True enough, when you seal the living daylights out of grout, water will bead up on it. And if you want that, keep going.
But most sealed grout does not bead up water. It only does that after multiple coats, when the grout is totally saturated with sealer.
It can still be very effectively sealed with no beading action visible. If I knew I put 2 coats on :clap2: , I would not worry about it.
not looking to remove the sealer with Meth Cl. Just curious if I should apply a 3rd or 4th coat of this silicon sealer or if I should go to some type of polymer or acrylic based sealer? any thoughts on this? the grout i used was a sanded tinted grout....i think it was something like keracolor. anyway, pretty standard stuff...............just really want to make sure my tile is sealed. maybe i should use the spray on stuff. its a new product, but i've never used it. it suppose to have some crazy gurantee of 15 yrs and you spray it on and what isnt absorbed just evaporates off. possilbly some type of alcohol, ester.................??? anyway.............any advice on my prediciment would be appreciated...that is, if I have a prediciment. am i to believe my grout may be sealed if water doesnt bead up on it? thanks again!!

We used the same product on our bathroom floor tiles. I put at least 3 or 4 coats on it and memory (two years ago) tells me that mine did not bead the water test either. If you like I can go check and report back, if you let me know what type of report you are looking for, i.e. is the grout darkened / cracked, etc.
Regards,
Tom
