I never wish to offend nobody but……. what am I missing here.

I'm driving down MD Hwy 5 last evening and I pull alongside this biker chick tooling down the road on her hog and I notice…… the hog has a MD motorcycle handicapped license plate attached to it?

A bit later I pulls' into a 7-11 fer a cup-o-java and park next to a tiny Miata (I think) with a MD handicapped license plate parked in a handicapped area. On a good day I would not be able to crawl either into or out of this pregnant roller skate of a vehicle?

Then I remember the bread delivery truck I saw somewhere recently, with bread, and driver, and a handicapped license plate… parked in a handicapped area delivering (you guessed it) bread?

Oh well…. Its' hell to gits' old.

I know someone with one leg that's ridden a motorcycle for as long as I can remember. Just because he can lift the prothesis over the bike doesn't mean he's not handicapped. I don't know if he has handicapped plates on his bike - I doubt it, though.

OK Dave,
Given that I was diagnosed on MD and it might be argued that the illness was the result of extended exposure to MD and that as a result I am now operating with only half my brains, it is fair to suggest that I shall be applying for a handicapped plate for the vehicle I choose to operate in and around MD. That is of course unless having only one ball is considered normal operating procedure in MD:D

Not being able to walk long distances is all it takes to get a handicapped plate. I see 20 or so spaces filled up for people sprinting out to their cars, while the guy in the wheelchair has to park out by the roadside.:)

I like the idea of the one-legged guy riding his motor cycle into HD and parking in the contractor pickup area. It could happen.

And I'll bet he doesn't bother with a handicap plate. ;)

I confront handicap violators, as a matter of principle. It really chaps my hide to see someone who's perfectly "able" taking up an extra-wide and close-set stall that's intended for people with difficulty walking. Once, a self-important quasi-hippie in Berkeley defending himself by screaming at me, "I'm dyslexic" when I challenged him on his handicap. Another guy jumped at me about his service to our country in Iraq as he shoved his *slightly* disfigured hand into my face. I thanked him for his service and then asked him why his hand injury qualified him for the wheelchair slot as I held up my own re-attatched finger.
The handicap parking thing has gotten so bad in the San Francisco area that stores now put their handicap slots 3 or four slots *away* from the store so the jack-asses don't snag them. That's just sad.
On the other hand though, I've seen legitimate handicapped folks double-park in front of supermarkets because there weren't any stalls available and they don't get ticketed, even in a fire lane.

Handicaps come in all sizes and shapes.

Wonder how Jeremy attaches a handicap sticker to a camel?

I do the same thing as Pie-rate,
but in the bathrooms. If I peek under the door and don't see wheels in a Handi-stall, I grab 'em by the ankles and out under the door and ask to see their sticker.

I will admit, I did feel pretty sheepish with the 'midget incidence' but I really thought I was in the Men's bathroom . . . really . . . and she was a brute too, doing chin-ups on the grab-bars, but that's a story for another day. :D

<serious mode on>
Matt, I've seen that too. It's unbeliveable to me, and I don't think it could speak well of our current society, but I ain't no sociologist.

Handicap issue's like those shaughnn ran across are defending themselves purely out of guilt..........they know Better but certainly are not going to admit it or knuckle under to some stranger ;)

My wife has a rear view mirror handicap stamp ( these are temporary issues given in this state that are renewable as needed.
You might see this is ner window and also see her sprint to a store........but not while parked in a handicap zone)
The reason she has one is that she is a care giver of the elderly. A Personal care attendent who takes these 80-90+ year old souls to thier appointments and to run thier errands.

The issue has many sides I am sure and many reasons why someone has a hdcp plate etc.............There are always problems with any program.........and we wont solve those problems here.
All we can do is hope for the best with a program like this and that peoples awareness of the genuine need to keep these spots available increases..........the only way this will happen short of a super bowl ad campaign is to make people accountable.........just like shaughnn does!!
