That's a great smilie, Dave. :usflag:

I go through something like this every year, so please bear with me. :)

I had three brothers who served in WWII, all in the Pacific. All are buried in National Cemetaries, all in the western part of the U.S. One each in the Army, Navy and Marine Corps. All made it through with only scratches and died of other causes later in life. I remember them all the time, of course, but especially on Memorial Day.

My only surviving brother served during the Korean War. He didn't go overseas, but he could have.

I was in Viet Nam, so it was five out of five. :)

Of my five sons, only the oldest has served. Did six years in the Army during the eighties. No war then. :)

Thanks Adriana. I'll add for the folks that "Granite Guy," Casper Pretorius, is a veteran of the South African army and served on "the front." We should be able to extend our national day to our allies offshore, shouldn't we? :)

Just found out about a new book called No True Glory: The battle for Fallujah.

My good friend and platoon mate SSgt. Allan Walker USMC dies on page 105.

I heard the movie is already being made and Harrison Ford is already in it.

My little bro is well. He should come home in November "God willing"

Showed my wife (USMC Sgt.) this thread and she says that reading the posts, and on a forum that has no military connection, makes her feel a greater sense of pride and purpose.

Being a Marine spouse, I get to show my appreciation to her and her fellow Marines pretty often -- but it somehow pales to what you guys (and gals) have spoken here.

By the way... she wants me to work on my artistic abilities for mosaics. She wants an Eagle, Globe and Anchor in the entryway to our home. Think I'll surprise her one day with one that says "Go Navy!" :devil2:

Hats off to anyone who has served, and thank you :usflag:

I might have to break out the 'Band of Brothers' DVD's tonight.

Well, I'm a little late on this thread because we were out of town.

Memorial Day always makes me very sad, and I try to get away and do something that will take my mind off the holiday. To me, its like going through my Mom's birthday, and she isn't around, so I get depressed.

There are a number of guys that I served with that aren't here anymore. There isn't a Memorial Day that goes by that I don't think of the three guys in our Platoon that didn't make it home. So sad.

I also want to make a shameless call for support to our boys in camo. I am a member of Books for Soldiers, and we distribute food packages, CD's, DVD's , and magazines to our service men and women over in Iraq. This is a non-political group so if you think the war is just great and want to kill more, or you think it is stupid and we should get the heck out, you'll be asked to leave your opinions to yourself. This is strictly about helping guys and gals who serve our country for little or no pay and get very little mail.

What support they've gotten in the past is evaporated because everyone has come to the realization that IS a stupid war and we should get out. So, all the flag wavers are gone, and alas our troops suffer.

The link to the organization is

http://www.booksforsoldiers.com/

You will be asked to make a credit card donation for a lousy $10 to verify that you are an American and not a terrorist. Then you can search out individuals and groups that might need your support.

The name is misleading because although we send books, the soldiers are 20 years old, and honestly could care less about reading a stupid book. They'd rather play video games, read truck magazines, eat snacks, listen to a CD, or watch a DVD. Sigh, somethings never change do they?

I go to doctors offices and collect huge boxes of magazines. A 6 month old People is just as entertaining as a current one. No pork, no porno (how tragic), no booze.

If you honestly believe that you wish to thank a serviceman or woman for being so free, then I would ask you to let your actions and pocket book demonstrate that fact.
