I have a Claycraft tile fireplace hearth circa 1927 that I'm restoring and am trying to match the grout to the original...the fireplace tile itself is intact with the original grout. I had new hearth tile repro's made and am now in the process of trying to track down information on how I can match the grout that's existing -- it's smooth, and wider than 1/4". It almost looks like cement! I'll use sanded grout if I have to, but does anyone out there know of an option?
Many thanks,
Adam

Hi Adam, Welcome! :)
You have several options. You can either find some precolored grouts and mix them yourself (carefully measuring), or get some dyes from your local masonry yard. One last option would be to use a grout stain, or grout colorant.

Hi John,
Thanks for your response! Since the grout from my fireplace is intact, and I'm trying to find matching grout for the hearth (which I'm restoring), can you recommend a smooth grout that can be used on lines wider than 1/4"?
If I have to use sanded I will, but I'd love to match the smoothness of the grout that's been there for the past 75+ years!
Thank you so much for the recommendations regarding matching color, they will definitely come in handy :yipee:

Hi Adam :)
More than likely one of two things is making that grout smooth. First would be a natural patina of soil and maintenance, or the second, is a topical coating was applied (once or several times) along the way.
I would not suggest a unsanded grout for anything over 1/8". If you really must have it, you can use and unsanded grout and add some 90 grit silica sand to the mix to help maintain some body (fuller joints).
