old pool tiles

My tiled swimming pool is 15+ years old, and the tiles are so worn out with sun and chemicals that they aren't even smooth anymore. The local professionals declare there is nothing to be done but change all the tiles. I would like to paint, but don't know anything about pool paint over tiles. Anyone have any experience with this?

I don't have to much experience with pools but I don't see how pool paint will fix or even help your problem. Maybe taking out the tile and replacing it is your only solution. Or maybe a pool liner? Might be cheaper than replacing all of the tile. But like I said I don't have alot of experience with pools. Sorry.

Can you post a picture of these tiles? I just restored some tumbled marble in a spa. I first thought they were hopeless, but after some experimenting, got them just like new.

It all depends on the type of tile you have. I can't comment whether paint or anything short of replacing them will be the solution, without seeing them.

Thanks for your interest, and possible solution. The digital camera is presently accompanying a family member overseas and my cell phone is an oldie! so no foto possible right now. If it helps, the tiles are "normal" glazed pool tiles, that have been subjected to very hard water, too much chlorine and acid (previous owners, of course!), and look porous and brittle and faded. When the camera returns, I'll send along a foto. I'm beginning to think I might just have to replace them after all.

you can do the work yourself and im guessing since your here then its an option:)

what kinda price did you get for the work?

how big is your pool? size and shape?

where in the country are you?

these guys here are all pros with tile!!!!!!

Sorry for the slow response time. I've been at Coverings in Orlando and haven't seen warm weather in a while, and got sidetracked! :D

We started with a 120 grit and worked up to 400 grit. Finished job with some enhancer to bring back some color.
