I happened along a post in the liberry and read it with amazement. I do however, wish to clarify a few points in my own mind. The post said:

"Water based contaminants tend to have a tension of around 35 (give or take here) and oil based contaminants are around 25 (again, give or take a bit)."

Most recommended test I have read abpout indicate to use a lemon and olive oil to determine if a sealer is required. I understand the oil to determine if the surface tension or density of the tile will allow the oil to penetrate and stain the surface.

What benefit or function does the lemon provide. The only thing that comes to mind is the citric acid in the lemon. Does this indicate the possibility of acid etching to the tile?

Any information would be appreciated.

The lemon juice test is mainly to determine the suitability of natural stone for use in a kitchen. Since no sealer will prevent acid etching, knowing beforehand if a stone will react to acids will prepare the homeowner to either change his stone or to live around his stone if he is determined to have it.
