I'm in the process of doing a tile job in my foyer and I've just finished laying my new sub-floor (new 1/2" ply over existing 5/8" ply). My new layer of 1/2" ply
was layed perpendicular to the joists. Now, for the hardibacker layer, do I have to lay that in the same direction as the ply layers, or doesn't it matter since the backer is not a "structural" element?

Thanks for the help.

Brian

BRI Guy
doesn't really matter. Just don't get the Hardi seams on top of the ply seams.
Good Luck

CBU doesn't really have a grain, and it doesn't add much strength, so it matters little which direction it is layed (well, on edge would be a problem :yeah: ). Placement is more important, like mentioned. Avoid lining up seams of the cbu and the plywood.
