Lurking for quite a while and now have some questions.
I have torn out old tub, tile and vanity.
Pulled out lino and tiled floor. Am ready to tackle walls around tub.
I am going to kerdi the walls above the tub.
The old tub was standard size, new one is 5ft x 36 inch wide

The issue I have is that one end of the tub needs to have the studs furred out 1/4 inch to get the tile to line up over the tub flange. To the right of the tub is a door and the rest of the wall that has been left in place. I have 8 inches between the tub and the frame of the door. Is there a way to fur out the studs at the end of the tub and then reduce it down to match up with where the old drywall remains.

I don't have bullnose tiles so was going to either use a schluter edge or caulk if that helps.

thanks for any suggestions

I ran into the same issue. I am not sure what the pros would do, but my wifey asked if me if we couldn't bump it out a little and make a little shelf. She said she was going to put something purty on there for decoration, like maybe a few little candles? Who knows, decorating is her to-do not mine. So I bumped it out a little with a 2x4 and sheetrock and kerdi over that. The picture is a little fuzzy, but you get the idea.

Welcome, alee. Please give us a first name to use if that's not it. :)

What prevents us from doing the fur-out at the other end of the tub where perhaps there is more room to fair out the wall?

Pretty short span to do much between the tub and the door casing. If you must make the fur-out there, I'd just leave the lip between the two wall thicknesses and try to dress it up with the Schluter trim or some such. You'll hafta take the tile all the way to the ceiling to make that work, though.

You got pichers of the other end of the tub? We like pichers. :D

And you have planned to add framing there at the new edge of the tub to fasten your wall boards, eh? Gettin' late for that already.

My opinion; worth price charged.

Al is the name. It's at the bottom of the post but got a little overshadowed by the pictures.
Gregg, thanks for the suggestion

CX, there is room on the other end of the tub to move it out but the plumber already hooked up the drain/overflow and set the tub with mortar. I'm afraid to move it because it is sitting pretty good. I should have been on him closer to see every step of what he had going on. Hadn't thought of the framing but guess I'll be adding that tonight! I was going to tile up to the ceiling anyways but I'll hang out and see if someone else comes up with an idea. Do you agree that moving the tub now is not a good idea or do you think I could move it a 1/4 inch and not cause trouble?

Thanks for the input

How about this: fur out the 1/4" necessary, then tile right to the edge of the area you furred out. To finish it, add some type of quarter-round tile strip from floor to ceiling that either matches or contrasts with your field tile. It'll blend the tiled area with the wall and add a little something extra. Maybe you can find quarter round to match your floor tile color/texture?

Just a thought.

Yeah, I just missed the signature down there, Al. :p

Well, I can't see it from here, but if it would fix my problem with that wall, I bet I could get me a quarter-inch on that other end. :)
