Most times, I just like the silence. However, with 4 teenagers at home, that rarely ever happens.

Right now, they're blasting the music on the DDR video game - all 4 playing together. ARRRGGGGHHHHH! :bang:

Then again. Their laughter truly is a beautiful sound.

That's it. I'm listening to the sounds of family.... :yeah:

I guess I should enjoy it while they're still here.

Right now, I'm playing some Elliott Smith and Cat Stevens. The computer is in Hannah's room and she's fast asleep. On the iPod Nano I wear around my neck at work, I've got The Killers, The Bravery, The Gorillaz, Yeah,Yeah,Yeahs, Sleeter-Kinney, Liz Phair, Tom Petty, Barenaked Ladies, Arcade Fire, Jolie Holland, Keb Mo, Neko Case, Son Volt, Wilco, Jay Farrar, Cowboy Junkies, Deathcab for Cutie, The Flaming Lips, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, The White Stripes, Madeleine Peyroux and the unflappable Mr. Jimmy Buffet. :) I also have a bunch of news and panel discussions podcasted. It all goes into shuffle mode and I change out the news stuff when it's made it through one playing.

Have to agree, George Carlin cracks me up. I have to be sure that I'm not doing anything else while I'm listening to him or I may lose a finger. Of course, it has to be the uncesored version since he can be a bit crass. The HBO standups they have shown in the past were a riot.

The Robin Williams HBO special was pretty damn funny too, the one where he had about 20 bottles of water on the table and throughout the show, he pretty much drank every one of them.

Los Straitjackets. It's an instrumental band that does a harder, punky-er version of the old 60's instrumental surf stuff. (Dick Dale, Ventures, etc)

Randy,
Now that Lint is off doing his "Transplants" gig and Matt's jumped over to Social Distortion, Lars Frederickson's got his own project going called "Lars Frederickson and the Bastards". It's loud and "screamy". :) Speaking of Lars's, have you heard MC Lars also out of the infamous East Bayyyy? Check out his song, "Hot Topic is not punk" if you can find it? :) Billy Joe Armstrong does occasional projects with his longtime friends. Pinhead Gunpowder was one incarnation that you might enjoy. If you need other outlets from which to pluck your punk chord, check out Steve Koepke's "The List". Steve's been putting together a nearly complete listing of Bay Area off-the-mainstream shows, from concert halls to backyard get-together's, since the days of the Mabuhay Gardens and the Firehouse. It's a good browse where you can find a name or two that seem to be developing a following and hunt for their stuff long-distance. Happy hunting!

Jerry,
Both links is broke.
A humerous story about Bill Graham and The Fillmore. One night between bands, Bill Graham walks into the men's room and begins to relieve himself at a urinal. Those of you familiar with the place may recall that there are awning-style windows over the urinals. Well, ole' Bill is standing there in his bell-bottom hip huggers when a skinny Latino kid starts crawling through the window above him, breaking into Bill's nightclub suring a show. Bill's a bit caught off guard and watches at the kid, with the grace of an experienced cat-burglar who's gotten through these very same windows before, shimmies past the glass and lands on the floor next to Bill with his pants still unzipped. Bill stops the kid and asks him why he's breaking into the club when the price at the door is already so cheap. The kid tells him that he can't afford the door and that he LIVES for the music that's coming out of the Fillmore and HAS to get inside. Bill gives him a job at the club and that gave Carlos Santana the free-time to practice his guitar and get a few gigs in when the bill was light. At least, that's the way the local legend goes. :D

New music in the tile Guy's ears
Eric Bibb " Spirit of the Blues" Really good gosipal blues and a great guitar player.

In the mail on Monday was Pat Donohue's "Back Roads" Pat is quitar player in the Prarrie Home Companion house band. A cut on it "Touch' Em All" a tribute to Kirby Pucket. It was strange it came the day Kirby left.

Have you guys heard of Pandora (http://www.pandora.com)? It's a personalized web radio station. It is very addictive. You feed it some groups or songs that you like, then it will pick similar stuff for you. Then you can rate each song that it gives you to customize your station further. You can have multiple stations and share them with friends.

It's free! I always have it going when I'm on the computer late at night, and at some point I need to find a way to pump it into my garage. I LOVE IT.

Residents of a suburban Sydney Park are furious at a musical move to combat late-night revellers.

The town of Rockdale has been blasting out Barry Manilow tunes to drive away car enthusiasts who gather on weekends at Cook Park Reserve.

"Barry's our secret weapon," Rockdale Deputy Mayor Bill Saravinovski said four weeks after the start of the effort.

"It seems to be working."

But some people living near the park are less than happy.

They say the barrage of "Copacabana" and "Que Sera Sera", blasting from 9pm to midnight every Friday, Saturday and Sunday is driving them crazy.

"I don't know how I will cope," said Moya Dunn, describing how the songs have invaded her house.

"I just can't sleep when it's on, and to think there's going to be another six months of this."

Officials have given in a little, agreeing to turn down the volume a bit after residents complained.

Mr Saravinovski added: "I'm not disputing what the residents are saying. I can't swallow some of the tracks."

"We have tried to reduce the sound and we are reviewing the songs."

are two of my favorite things. Places to eat and musicians singing off the beaten path...out in the woods...
most of my favorite musicians are not mainstream. Slaid Cleaves is one of those. Monty Montgomery is another...Joe Ely...Jimmie Dale Gilmore...Jimmie La Fave...Billie Joe Shaver...Tim Ryan (Girl With Eyes of Green)...etc...
I'm independent as a hog on ice and I love the 'indie' artists.

Trask, Robert Rodriguez also checked himself into a medical testing 'pay you ' facility where he was able to write "Maraichi Man", a great shot from the hip indie movie. The powers in Hollywood gave him millions to shoot a remake with Antonio Banderas. Robert Rodriguez is living proof that some artists shine more brightly as independents than as mainstreamers.

It was a cover of Buddy Miller's "Does My Ring Burn Your Finger" (not Lee Anne Womack's version). I'm excited for the album. Here's an article about Michael Franti of "Spearhead", whom I mentioned a few posts back. It really is a "feel good" kind of album, and remains upbeat while retaining Franti's political integrity. Definately worth a listen or two.

Umm....music. My favorite album for the past 4-5 months has been the Silversun Pickups (1st release, 2nd to come soon? alread here?). Kind of moody, very flavorful. If Black Frank from the Pixies were melded with Billy Corgan, you would get the vocals very close to right.

Another one I picked up that was very surprising was the Broken Flowers sountrack. If you like Jazz you should definetely check it out. I usually avoid soundtracks like the plague but this is one that I am not ashamed to own. I found (read: downloaded) the album that has the Mulatu Astatke cd that is seperate from the rest of the soundtrack. That Holly Go Lightly tracks are nice too.

I also have this thing for the Beatles White Album and for Rubber Soul. There are other albums I like, but these are in my top 10 of all time.

The new Silversun Pickups albums is already out and it's got quite a few good tracks. I posted a link to their first single off of it a few pages back in this thread. It's called "Lazy Eye" and the fuzzy guitar and Brian's singing really work together well in it. When he breaks tempo into a roar I always get this "refreshed" feeling and smile. :) Yummy stuff! Have you checked out "Band of Horses", the "Black Angels" or "Ghostland Observatory" yet. All are getting pretty heavy play on KEXP 90.3FM up here in Seattle, which simulcasts and podcasts it's shows. A very good website to browse.
Enjoy!,

Hahaha...what a great thread. I've probably got one of the most eclectic tastes in music ever. I grew up on classic rock...Beattles, Stones, Morrison etc. Loved Joplin too. I will also turn on the local country and listen to "new" country; Martina McBride, Gretchen Wilson, Alan Jackson etc. I like the old Johnny Cash as well. "A boy named Sue"...great song!!.
But I've got a dark secret that I can never truly realease. You know those vid shots of Raves where kids are going all night long with neon tubes and such?? I love that music. I can "trance" right out on stuff like "Confusion by New Order" (theme song to 1st Blade) or Darude's sandstorm. At home I'll put on the cordless phones and just CRANK it and listen to all the "techno house" stuff I've d/l'ed.
*Sigh*...but nope...can't do that. I'm "old"..."you'd look like an idiot" they say. ...(how did I get so old so fast...I was born way too soon  )

Then there's my son who's 19 and into Goth!

Tom Brosseau's "Grand Forks" album has an accompanyment from Hilary Hahn on fiddle. Compare this folksy fiddle to her amazing violin and it's easy to see what a wonderfully deep person she is. Jeb,
I cheat. I have the wonderful good fortune of having KEXP radio (http://www.kexp.org/home.asp?noflash=true) here in Seattle. I honestly have never known a radio station that is so completely ahead of the musical curve as this one is. IF you want to know what the "hip" radio stations of any genre will be playing NEXT YEAR, you'll hear it as a live "in studio" session on KEXP first. Last year they had over 400 "in studio" performances (many available for free download on their website). It's everything that radio could be if you took corporate ownership out of it. It's radio people playing the music (all genres) which gets them off. It's refreshing and passionate.
Back in August, I was listening to KEXP one night and thought of an artist whom I thought would really fit well into the DJ's playlist so I called him up. The DJ answered his own phone and when I said, "You know, I think that Jean Shepard might fit really well with what you're playing tonight.", He replied, "I've got Jean Shepard cued up on the turn-table right now". Not the song I was suggesting but still a mind-blower that "The Grand Lady of the Grand Ole Opry" would get playtime next to artists like "The Trucks", "Band of Horses", "...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead" and "Citizen Cope".
I don't know that I can accurately express how much I appreciate this radio station (which also "streams" it's broadcasts in several different formats).
Eric,

I just heard that Chris Cornell is quitting Audioslave. I never liked Audioslave anywhere near as much as I liked Rage Against the Machine or Soundgarden. Seemed like bad chemistry from the get-go. I had to laugh when Chris sang Killing in the Name of at Live 8. That isn't even a song without Zac.

I know the band has some major socialist tendencies, but I like them anyway because they're really angry about some of the same stuff that makes me angry. It's just that we have different ideas about how to fix things - really different.

It's really hard to beat Rage when it comes to pure sonic anger though.

Rush Limbaugh used to play Rage coming out of his breaks. That used to crack me up. I don't know if he was aware of it, or if he just had some kid doing it.

I've been meaning to take that one in, Shaughnn. I bet Scorsese's work with The Band is what ultimately led him to this project. I won't wait much longer to see it. I've been a blues fan for some time now. I was born in Chicago, and then Led Zeppelin made me want to visit their influences.

I need more music... I'm cutting slabs late tonight and my I-pod is thirsty for something new.

Nothing "Muddy"sounding. Too much stuff out there parading as "alternative" that simply obscures the artist voice with sub par rythem guitar. Guess that's why I'm always moving towards unplugged.

Trask,
Jolie Holland and Tom Brosseau are both airy near-accapella folky singers with songs which invite whistling along. I like working to them both.
For a podcast alternative, you could try "This American Life" or "The Commonwealth Club" for a heaping helping of brain food?
KEXP had the English Beat back together in in the studio for a live boradcast on Thursday. It was absolutely amazing and it should be available for free in their archives by now. Twist & Shout!

I was spinning through the TV channels tonight (short trip on my antenna) and I ended up mesmerized by the flawless voice of Loreena McKennitt. She was featured on PBS. You know it's the good stuff because they're in the midst of a money drive. I realized that I had heard some of her songs before, but wow! Sonically and visually striking.

I first saw them perform in Berkely back in 1993 and was very confused about what they were doing. Now that I'm older and have a broader view I realize how inspired they've always been. Nifty people too.

Doug, I don't know if I've ever met anyone who flat out didn't like Yes. I think they're unbelievably fantastic when they're at their best.

Yes, gets way overplayed by the DJ on this one Pittsburgh station, everyday, One of the same two songs. The chic DJ really is annoying and she takes it right into the song. That is why I now listen to Sirius. I can pick my own station to listen and for the most part there aren't DJ's asking what your name is telling you what time it is, and the weather. It drive me nuts when I get to the job and there is a painter listening to that station.
I appreciate the talent of Yes. I just hate their sound.

Well, you can't blame the band for a station that overplays them, but I sure can appreciate your frustration.

I agree that the stolen anime doesn't fit with the music at all. I tried to find some links for "Boiled in Lead" but didn't have much luck. They're a "Rock & Reel" folksy rock band from the mid-West and are pretty good. Their earlier stuff "Orb" and "Ladel to the Grave" are the albums I know the best. Garmarna is a band from Sweden on the same label and I used to love their first self-titled album. If you can find anything by them, you might enjoy it?

A little off the beaten path here for hard bop jazz fans...

"Free for All" by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. On the title track Art Blakey, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard and Curtis Fuller each turn in some solos that you have to hear to believe. If you listen close you can hear the band cheering each guy on as they light it up. This music would give Kenny G a heart attack.
