Delmonico steak, and on nights we're not having steak, hamburgers! Both liberally dosed with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Burgers need to be rosy pink and juicy. Steaks need to be seared and blackened on the outside, bloody red in the middle. Excuse me while I wipe the saliva off my keyboard.

Them big old beef ribs at Cooper's BBQ will be my downfall. weigh in at about a pound each.

When I was teaching I had a student from Australia, and he brought in some vegemite for us to try. 15+ years ago, and I still remember it!

Did you eat it neat? Here's the quick tip: DON'T EVER EAT THAT STUFF NEAT! We often get exchangees to eat it off a teaspoon, its just too funny for words!!!!! If you ever get the chance to try it again, spread it veeeeeeeerrrrrrry thinly on some hot buttery toast: guarantee you will like it! Speaking of yucky, whats the go with Dr Pepper? Never tried it until a couple of years ago (bought some at a specialty store for homesick foreigners) Do you use it as paint stripper when it goes flat?

Rob Z
02-02-2006, 10:47 PM
Dr Pepper  I love Dr Pepper, but cold and not flat. :)

I think I had the vegemite on a piece of bread. I had fun that year because I had students from all over the world...Australia, England, Sri Lanka, India, France, Mexico, and others.

With your advice, I'll try it again. Don't know if it is sold anywhere around here though.

Well, have a hunt about for some and if you can't find it, I would be more than happy to post you some!!!!! Its now available here in tubes as a handy travel pack for those who can't be without their Vegemite. It's a little bit sad, really. I did find the thread on grits interesting, too.

We have a French exchangee here at the moment: very funny guy. He really likes Australian food: has put on 8 kgs in 3 months. He claims that frogs are low-fat. And won't let us call Aussie sparkling white wine "champagne": he gets very testy about that. He loves our lamb: is it true you guys don't eat much lamb over there?

No where near that of beef or chicken. I think most find it pretty baa-aaa-aaad. :clap2:

There are gyro stands in quite a few locations, but no where near the number of hamburger joints. :)

Okay, one last question then I'm going to the pub: do you guys really drink Foster's? Because no-one here actually does. We think its funny that the Brits drink it (but we don't really need an excuse to laugh at them!) Have a good weekend!

Tool Guy - Kg
02-02-2006, 11:38 PM
You can find Foster's in the bars that specialize in lots of different beers, but not everywhere. It's kind of like another beer called Old Milwaukee....it's junk....yet people drink it.

It's the Brits, not us Americans. Make fun of them. :D

OK, we defined grits, now what the hell is Vegemite? Sounds like something you'd spray on plants to kill insects.

True sheep are not a big part of our diet here. They have a very strong political lobby. The only ones eaten have been executed for crimes against nature. :sheep:

When we lived in Australia I tried Vegemite. From what I recall, it is the yeasty remains (sludge) left over from the beer brewing process. It comes in a jar and looks like dark peanut butter; like Nutella but lighter in color. And not as good tasting. ;) It's very salty and has a taste that's hard to describe. I ate it "neat" with a bunch of Aussies watching for my reaction. Evidently it was very funny, to them.

Spread thinly on hot buttered toast sounds like it would be better than the way I had it.

I visited Australia about ten years ago and realized then that Foster's wasn't very popular there. Seems I remember VB (Victoria Bitters?) and XXXX (Four X) were the most popular. I drank a LOT of XXXX.

John Bridge

Never had nor even hear of vegimite. Please steer me clear of it, though, from the sound of this dialog. ;)

Foster's is like all other foreign beers imported into this country -- not very good. I remember a German beer from years ago called Lowenbrau. Not many Germans would drink it, so they shuffled it off to the States where it became a high-priced hit. ;)

And now back to food. No self-respecting Texan can make it much more than a month without a chicken-fried steak. This is a breaded and fried piece of beef that has been run through a tenderizer a couple of times. The chicken fraud is smothered with gravy and served with mashed potatos and a veggie. Comes on a large platter. If it doesn't cover the platter, it's a reject. ;)

For food, I'd have to say a good meatloaf sandwich hits the spot. I like mine on marble rye with mayo, lettuce, and a slice of provolone cheese. Throw in a dill pickle and plain potato chips on the side with a cold beer, yummy!

Of course, it has to be good meatloaf, and my wife makes a really good one.

What about a good ole homemade cheesecake?

south
02-03-2006, 04:23 PM
That's exactly what the stuff is, Will: scraped straight from the bottom of brewing vats and shoved in a jar: yummy! My mum used to drink it as a hot drink as a kid: a tablespoon in hot water then drink it like tea. It explains a lot!

Steve, I can't believe you drank XXXX and admitted that you like it! :twitch: VB or Carlton Draught are definitely the way to go.

That cheesecake looks awesome: what's on the top in the second photo? Favourite sweets here is pavlova: giant merangue (about the size of a dinner plate) covered in whipped cream and fresh fruit. And sometimes a little bit of chocolate gets sprinkled on there too. Oooooh, and Tim Tams: they're chocolate biscuits smooshed together with more chocolate then covered in , well, more chocolate. Okay, stopping now. Tummy is grumbling....

I could go for a piece of my mom's pecan pie (she is from Oaklahoma) with that chicken fried steak.
I couldn't live far from the ocean. Got to have that fresh, salmon, halibut, crab, shrimp, tuna, mussels, etc. Can't ever have to much.
And some good German Bockwurst during the SuperBowl.

That is pretty funny.
My Copper when little expained to the world one day that yes "I believe in Santa Clause but I don't think Mr Goodwrench is real"

When she was young I would tell her she had better start behaving our I was going to put her on the next pirate ship that came into port. (We were living in Valdez Ak at the time) Shortly after moving to Seattle we all loaded in the car to go tour the Mexican Navy training ship. One of the tall ship kind of boats.
Drove up to the pier area and Copper just threw a fit about getting out of the car. Hands and feet against the side of the door and screaming NO NO NO. It took awile but finally Copper why not. "Daddy its a pirate ship, I'll be good always" Made me feel like a heel.
Watch what you say to those litttle ones guys

John, unfortunately the old orange roughy has gotten a bit of a hiding in NZ waters from commercial fishermen, some of the deep water reef populations have just about been wiped out. Dumbarse NZ government let the commercial guys fish it almost to extinction in some areas :bang: . That will be why it's so expensive now.

Rob.
