So I have been considering buying a gun safe but have concerns about my floors ability to withstand such a beast. The safe is a relatively small one at about 800 lbs. My floor is composed of 2x8's that are 12 foot long and the subfloor is 3/4 plywood. I am planning to sister the 2x8's with additional 2x8's.

Do you think this would be sufficient for this amount of dead weight?

Thanks!

Jerry, that safe is eqivalent to about 16-20 square feet of normal floor loading. Your floor won't cave in, but the deflection will be more than you'd want for tile. The sisters are a good idea anyway, since your floor seems to be a little on the bouncy side, even without tile.

Your biggest problem will be moving the safe through the house. If you could, lay down some plywood to protect the floor against the heavy point loading of the dolly wheels.

The safe will not come in contact with tile at any point in the journey. So do you think I would still need to put the plywood down while moving it in the house?

Thanks for your quick response!

Yes, to protect the flooring. Even carpet can be damaged by extremly high wheel loads.

Could easily get some cracks along drywall seams, especially wall to ceiling transitions.

So, you boys saying that when my Aunt Betty visits, I need to be setting down plywood for her to walk through the house? :laugh2:

No, you need those 1" thick solid steel plates you drive over during road construction projects. :laugh2:

What do you need a gun safe for?

You use one of your favorite guns to keep the others safe.:D
