View Full Version : Where are the dry states?

Alright, I know that this isn't exactly a Katrina-level tragedy but dammit we've gotten some pretty heavy rain in the past few days. And today, the sump pump in my basement burned out so that my furnace's air pump intake is under water. But it gets better, folks! I have called around all afternoon, while also trying to rebuild the sump pump, and I haven't found one for sale within 100 miles. Most stores around here aren't expecting to get a re-stock until MAYBE Friday and they are NOT taking pre-orders. And so, I am currently taking a break from bailing out my basement with mastic buckets (laugh all you like) and enjoying a triple-Speyside scotch while I wonder if I'm gonna need to do this all week long until I can find a replacement pump. And that's how the novel idea hit me. "I'll ask the internet to solve my problems!"
If anyone in Texas or one of the other three dry states in the Western part of the country is willing to pick up a sump pump for me and Fed EX it to me before the weekend I'd seriously consider it.
What I'm looking for is something similar to a Flotec (http://www.flotecpump.com/pdf/Page_06_2004.pdf) 1/4 HP Model# FPOS1800A I don't need a big pump, I just need one that's gonna keep me from having to wake up every four hours and plug it in for 20 minutes. Having a 5 month old baby, I've already got a schedule like that and working in a second is JUST TOO MUCH. :)
A-heem, Thanks for listening and while this is probably just a venting thread, I'd love to talk with anyone who might be able to help me get a pump before the expected storms of the weekend arrive.

PS: A huge "thank you" to Andy from Felker! He sent me a pump to test-drive, a long while back, and while it's been a little too large and awkward to use it with my tile saw, it's happily helping me right now to empty my basement while I take the time to type this drunken rant. That little devil sure can pump! Thank you again, Andy!

Shaughnn,
I live in Salt Lake City. I could find a pump for you tomorrow if you needed and ship it to ya. You like that idea or you wanting to see if any of the boys here have one to loan?
I don't have a sump pump to loan but if I was any closer, I'd bring my rig over there and suck it dry for ya. (I own a carpet cleaning company- I got a permanent "sump pump" in my truck. :) )

Harbor Freight has this one -->> http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=4836.
I got a harbor Freight up the street. Tell me what you want. I got a bunch O' stores I could go around to as well.

Sounds like ordering one online would be about the quickest way to get you one, Shaughnn. I could pick one up tomorrow, too, but I'd still hafta ship it.
You having any sort of deliver problems out there?
Oh, and if it makes you feel any better, our current drought is being called the worst in 50 years. Relative humidity alleged to have been single digit today. I didn't think that happened hereabouts.
But it's not all good news. Last night the temp dropped below 50 and today it barely got up to 80. :D

Thanks Shawn,
I hadn't thought to call Harbor Freight. You can do a site search for the reasons why. :D But I think I'll call the one up the road from me tomorrow and see what their inventory is like. Thank you, but I don't think I'll take you up on the offer as spending $50 to ship a $100 pump is just too rich for me to come to terms with. Like I said, this is probably more of a "rant" thread than it is a serious call for assitance.
Kelly, If I can figure out a way to get you some of our rain, can I become an honorary Texan? I got a dog down the street from me that howls at any opportunity and today she's just sulking in the rain, while sitting on her porch. I don't think I've ever seen her this quiet and dejected? It just falls from the sky and it just keeps on falling. That guy Noah, did he leave his blueprints laying around anywhere? :D

PS Alcohol update, 2006 My wife just informed me that she doesn't trust me to operate the microwave without supervision. I think I need another drink. :)

Ok - best of luck to ya Shaughnn. (don't never say we wasn't willing to help you's!)
cx - I saw on the news- you boys don't have rain but it looks like yer trying to burn yer entire state to the ground. No?
sw(shawn)
Yep, but the good news is we got a lot of state. :)
I been in this particular part of Texas for about 20 years and I think this is my fourth or fifth hundred-year drought. And I stopped countin' the hundred-years floods at five, too. They don't tell you none of that when they tell you what the "average" rainfall is for the area. :D
Hey Pie-rate,
I was wonderin' how you 3 have been.
Lot of water no bout a doubt it.
Took me and the wife 8 hrs to get to Fairfield and back, via Berryessa as the 80 was shut down, via Suisun. 29 had the river going across it, and took Dry Creek rd. and it wasn't even close to being dry. Crossed the Napa river in Rutherford and have a waterline on the door of the truck (4' high?) passing flooded cars that were being pushed down river. There was over 12' of mud on the 121 to Berryessa, and had to engage 4wd for the first time in CA (who woulda thought?)
Arnie was here today speaking, so I feel relived now <smart a$$ grin>
I don't have any pumps, but there's a Harbor Freight in Amer. Cyn. (as you prolly know) If you need any sparky help getting the heat back on lemme know. Otherwise there's meat in the freezer and enough rabbits around here to live for a few years, if things get real rough. :D
I'm going to try to get to work Tues. but will be avail. via cell in the morn. Feel free to give me a shout.
Maybe we should start a mold abatement business? :uhh:
hope things get better for you soon,
Mark

Shaughnn, Harbor Freight has several in the $49 range. Go here and search on pumps (http://www.harborfreight.com/)
Various locations in CA here (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/retail_stores.taf#CA)

Thanks Mark,
I've got 10 more bottles of various single-malts in the cabinet. If things get any *better* for me, I'm sleeping on the porch. :)
I'll call you tomorrow if I'm able to pick up the levels and the bucket heater for you. Time to go check the well.
Shaughnn
PS: Hannah's sleeping with her ass-end hoisted into the air and her face buried in a pacifier. If I could navigate the camera right now, you all would be dumb-stuck by this cuteness.
Don't sweat the levels-n-heater, water 'out da house' first.
Hell, I might help you with those 10 bottles though . . . course I don't have a porch, might need the bucket heater after all, in case the single malt breath won't light a fire. :D
"you all would be dumb-stuck by this cuteness."
My wife might argue that I was dumb-struck at birth, it's debatable. Just make sure you don't end up like that on the porch, don't wanna see a picture of that, not for a 'hunret' bottles of sing. malt. :shake:
Have a fine evening,
Mark

It's dry out here and though there are fires, most Oakies are enjoying the sunshine and warmer temperatures. I hate the COLD so I'm not complaining.

Found a plumbing supply company that was closed all of last week and so the new sump pump is purring away quite happily in the basement now. :D Thank you to everyone for such generous offers.
Shaughnn
Kewl Shaughnn,
Glad you got da pump. Is your heater working or did it get flooded? Lemme know . . . us boys can drink warming fluid, but the womens and chitlens demand more refined accomodations (or at least I've heard such alleged demanding from Mrs. Mark)
It's a mess in downtown Napa, but still a walk in the park compared to what the Southern states have endured. I'll take earth-shakers any day of the week. :D
