Hello I am recieving mixed reports on what is the best way to maintain my marble floor (keep it shiny). Some say to wax others say not to wax (maintenance reason I believe). The other alternative I suppose would be to polish it back up when it starts looking pretty bad. I don't know exactly what is the best routine to have. The marble I have is a white color if it matters. Thanks

Hi Willl :)

We usually go by first names around here. (Hint, hint!) :shades:

The very best way to maintain marble is to keep it natural. This includes walk off mats, if necessary. Wax is usually applied as a sacrificial layer. A natural polished surface, is the most cost effective way to maintain marble vs. the wax and strip method.

Regular dust mopping (with an untreated mop or Swifter) will also help. Regular cleaning with a stone & tile specific neutral pH cleaner helps keep the stone and grout clean.

If the floor becomes severely scratched, restoration will be in order. Grinding may be necessary if there is excessive lippage. If not, honing and powder polish will restore the high sheen. Stay away from crystallization. It can damage the stone, and may the floor look like a plastic layer on top.

Hello,

At the risk of sounding realllly ignorant - what is a walk off mat? I have a tiny master bath with a marble tile floor and have been wondering about sealing or whatever to protect it. I'm worried that any little spills of other cleaning stuff for sinks and toilets might spill on it and wreck it. Products I've seen say not to use on floor because they make it slippery. Should I at least seal the grout and what's a good grout sealer to use??

Thanks,

Carla

Hi Carla, Welcome! :)

Please don't ever be embarassed about asking a question. Usually in commercial settings the walk off mat is simply the rubber backed runner at enty points off the street. Sometimes they are the cloth covered grates in the vestibules. With dry weather usually 8 feet are calculated to clean shoes off before they hit the hard surface.

Most polished marbles will not absorb sealers, but I believe in sealing the grout, unless epoxy grout is used. Anything acidic will etch a marble surface, no matter what sealers are used. A topical coating may gain some time as a sacraficial layer, before etching.

Specific brand sealers for the grout are as follows:

Our website carries Stone Tech Products. HD Stone Sealer is an excellent grout sealer.

Aqua Mix Sealers Choice Gold is also a good choice.

SCI, Prosoco, MBStone, Lithofin, Miracle Sealants, Fila, etc. are all Flagship companies for providing high quality sealers to the Natural Stone & Tile industries.
