Hey Folks!

We're trying to remove old vinyl flooring glue from a ceramic tile floor. So far have tried alkaline, acid and certain solvents. We used 5F5 with Methylene Chloride and Goo Gone, but nothing budged this stuff.

Any ideas? Gent at tile distributors was of the opinion that we could simply rip up the floor and get a decent result that way. I wonder if there is an intermediate step short of using a nuclear device....

OH, heat gun did not work either. Just melted it and spread it all over... :crap:

So much will depend on the type of adhesive used. sometimes we will spread a cheap floor patch over the top of the adhesive then scrape it up after it has dried.

Most of the buckets of vinyl glue also state what you can remove it with, but as mentioned you need to know what kind, otherwise it's trial and error,or you can try the big co., like Prosoco,Aquamix,Dupont,3m,and such.

Spray some WD-40 on it and let is sock for awile and see what that does.
Acetone might well cut it also.

Hi Clay :)

How do these projects find us? :shades: :D

Are you restoring the ceramic and just want to remove the glue? If not, what exactly are you trying to do?

There could be a reason it was covered in the first place.

The most successful stripper I have used is Prosoco's Fast Acting Stripper.

Can you tell if it's water or solvent based?

Approx. how old is the installation of the vinyl? Ceramic?

Hi Clay,

If you could answer the questions posed plus the dwell time used before removal effort? Plus did you try suction after allowing the cleaning agents to dwell on the glue?

If it a solvent, then Jerry's idea is good. If it is water based then a citrus based stripper followed by dishsoap and warm water.
