View Full Version : Sealing over mastic on concrete

We are planning on laying new carpeting on our basement floor which is concrete. When we pulled the old carpet up there was old tile flooring that was probably installed in the early 70's. Before we realized we were dealing with asbestos based products (the tile and mastic) we had already removed all of the tile. What we have now is a concrete floor covered with the black mastic that was used to adhere the tile to the concrete. We would prefer to seal or paint over the mastic rather than going through the process of removing the mastic. The basement will be partially used as a play area for our kids and I want the safest, yet least expensive solution before we have our carpeting installed. Any suggestions on what products would be most appropriate for this job? Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You may want to use a floor prep, slc over the area,like9500 Shaw Patch..or..Ardex sd-l.

If you are only going to put down carpet there are chemicals that will remove the adhesive but they may interfere with a glue down carpet.
SLCs can't go over cutback.

Am I correct in assuming that the new carpet will be direct glued? And are you sure the adhesive contains asbestos?
I would avoid any adhesive removers, like Flatfloor said. But Ardex K-15(a self leveler) is approved over cut-back residue with the P-82 primer. But the easiest, and cheapest, would be to just skim the floor with Feather Finish, which is also approved.

Hi Craig, Kara did not say it will be glue down. I mentioned it as a possibility.
Ardex says K-15 can go over cutback but you must get the cutback residue to the point it is almost a shadow. Same goes for Feather Finish, no where in their installation directions do they call for P-82 with FF.

Hi Kara, Welcome! :)
Why not otherwise skimcoat with an approved thinset such as Mapei's Keralastic / Kerabond system.
