I bought a home a few months ago and did not figure out until recently that not only is the grout on the tile floor in the master bathroom hardly there is some areas, but it has been reglazed over ( and not a very good job at that). I am now trying to regrout the shower, but I am wondering if I am doing more harm than good. I can't afford to replace the shower at this time, but I need to fix this problem.
1. Do I need to remove all the grout completly from the joints in order to regrout it? Or do I need to only go down a little bit. I am using white grout and the grout that is already there is white.
2. I am going to have to have the reglazing striped and redone, so should I have that done before removing and replacing the grout or after.
3. If they come in and strip and reglaze the shower is that going to ruin the sealer that is being put on the grout.

Please help me with my perdicament.
Thanks

Usually if grout is coming out it represents a movement problem, maybe problems underneath the tile.I'm not familiar with reglazing, maybe someone else is, but i would check with the people reglazing to see what they say.You can scrape out part of the grout, and regrout over what's left in the joint, as long as the grout isn't up to the top of the joint. It isn't easy to scrape it out, and you tend to chip the edges of the tile...at least i do,even using every different grout scraping tool they make, other than the electric ones, which i haven't used.

Welcome Maklane,

If you are going to have this done, regrout now and let them re-glaze after you are done. You need to clean out 2/3rds of the grout depth before grouting again. But you aren't going to seal the grout at all when you are done. Why? Because the new glazing is sprayed over everything...the tile and the grout. If you sealed the grout, you are just giving the new paint a less friendly surface to adhere to.

That being said, I'm not a big fan of reglazing. They don't last long enough to justify the cost. Think of this: you are already re-glazing the re-glazing job.

If you're plannng on reglazing over the floor I wouldn't bother.

I know a guy who reglazes and he fills and holes or missing grout with bondo! and sprays right over it so you shouldn't have a problem.
