fireplace sealing?

My husband and I just recently tiled over a brick fireplace (we're newbies) with a chinese natural slate tile. The slate seems prone to chipping so I was thinking about sealing it however I have read that standard sealers shouldn't be used in a high heat area. Any suggestions?
