Hi Bug Man, Welcome! :)

What's your first name? :shades:

1. You could try a piece of wood and try to scrape off the thinset. If that doesn't work, I would carefully try a small putty knife.

2. Most guys will seal, then grout. Stone Techs Grout Release has also been known to be very effective.

3. What do you want the slate to look like when you are finished?

4. Use a grout bag if you can. Don't try to do too large of an area at one time.

Hey thanks, Names Garrett
I want the slate to be ,so a glossy/shiny when finished as it will be outside....
so a grout bag is the easiest way??? is that like a cake makers icing tube??

would you reccomend the sealing first then grouting?? I have read of you grout 1st then seal that you can leave a haze on it??

Hi bug man, you can use some clean water to get the thinset off. You shoulda got it off right away. I like to seal the slate then grout then seal after the grout has dried. Use a grout float and just try to force it into the joints and not get it all over the slate. Makes wiping eaiser

Welcome, Garrett. :)

Please don't post the same question on more than one forum. Causes way too much confusion and duplication. If you post on the wrong one, someone will move you where you need to be.

I've combined your threads and removed the dupes. I hope. :)

The product I use on Slate & Flagstone is Easy Cares Enhance and Seal, it gives a gloss to semi-gloss finsh depending on the coats applied. I put it on a commercial Slate entry 2 years ago and it still looks the same. Slate usully takes one coat Flagstone 2-3

Hi Garrett,

Some forms of black slate are more bituminous (oil like) in mineral content, I suggest that you apply a solvent based sealant/enhancer.
