Dull Spots on Marble Floor

hi, I installed a tan marble floor about 4 yrs ago and used a sealer (only once). I've noticed several dull spots starting to show up randomly on the floor. I don't think there were any chemical spills that could have caused this. Most of the spots are irregular in shape and feel slightly rough. I used backerboard and marble thinset when I laid the floor. Spray on marble polish doesn't help (TileLab Stone Gloss Polish) Any ideas?

Hi Chuck,

The areas shown in your pics are classic examples of chemical damage, actually I believe that your pic is the outline of a container that had an acidic cleaner spill over. Call a stone restoration professional and make sure he speaks of diamond abrasives and polishing powders. If a simple tradesman speaks of a magical liquid that will bring back the luster then my best advice is to send him on his way.

Polishing natural stone "The Right Way" is an advanced skill which will always last longer than a chemical compensator.

Yeah, it's a perfect outline of a bottle of something, maybe even window cleaner, i've seen that happen to some Jerusalem stones.

I totally agree with Michael and Dave. Those dull spots are commonly found on many marble bathrooms. It could be caused by anything from toilet bowl cleaners to hair shampoos. Basically, any product that has a acidic content (pop, wine, juice etc.).

On a marble repairs, depending on the extent of the damage, silica carbide abrasives can also be used (if diamond abrasives aren't used). Many times a successful repair will also use some type of marble polishing compound to "snap or pop" the final shine.

Don't be suprised if your entire floor needs to be done. There may be enough wear to warrant it.
