Any body have any experience with this stuff? Cement board with wood particles. Architect wants to use it for substrate, then top it off with SLC. This in a Multi-Gazzilion Dollar beach house in the Hamptons (LI NY)

Don't those architects realize that a multi gazillion dollar house deserves mud on the floor?

I worked on a job a few years ago (only a $600,000 remodel) where the architect kept refering to a "mud job" in the bathrooms. As I was discussing height differences and thresholds, I could tell that we weren't communicating. All was made clear when she showed me the plans and I saw a cross section of a floor, with thinset labeled under the tile. She said "See, it's a mud job". It was an interesting one, to say the least.

This Viroc sounds like fiber cement board such as Hardibacker and the one that USG makes (the name escapes me).

I have not heard of the stuff, either. I read the web page that Bri listed, and it seems to be a little short of specs. I would talk the folks into Hardibacker. It comes in 4x8 sheets as well as the 3x5s. Anytime particle board is mentioned I get nervous. What are you putting on top of the stuff?

Particle board scares the hell out of me 2, that's why I asked. Other than SLC I don't know what he's doing yet (don't know if he does either) this guy has a reputation for weird stuff and so I'm getting this in dribs and drabs.

Picture a beach house that looks like a Pagoda and we can go from there. With a roof that opens.

Thanks all!

Beach house, eh? I would definitely go with Hardie or one of the other US made backers.

Hey Jim, go ahead and list your complete url in your signature. Start with the http:// business. Then anyone who sees your signature can check your site from there. I certainly have no objections. I list my url all over the Internet -- all over the universe, actually.
