They've ordered the evacuation of the entire city. This is bad, very bad.

Another board I frequent had a get-together there this week end. I can't believe they didn't cancel it.

Watching the news, there are many people in Bourbon Street bars happily drinking away their cares. I rode one out in Houston that way, but we are a hundred feet ABOVE sea level. Bourbon Street averages 15 feet below. C'mon, folks, sober up. :)

i growed upin new orleans, but i'm glad im not there now. all my relatives leff town for this hurricane.

i remember hurricane betsy in 1965. we didn't have good forecasts then so we stayed in the city. i remember the windows and house shaking and bricks falling down the chimney during the storm. we could see power lines snapping and sparking in the wind like giant snakes. the next day the streets the flooded, trees were down. slates that blew off the roofs were stuck into the wood siding on our house. can you imagine being sliced by a slate traveling more than 100MPH?? it was exciting as a kid but my parents was scared.

i also was in hurricane camille although it didn't hit the city as bad as it did on the gulf coast. we droved through mississippi a week after camille and it was unbelieveable. all that were left of brick houses were the front steps and the slab. nothing else. nada.

this ones bad. lets hope it weakens before it hits.

lotsa tourists is stuck there because no flights and no rentall cars. all they can do is drink. or go to the superdome... maybe they shood wrap themselfs up in ditra and hope for the best.

i wonder how all the oil rigs are doing in the gulf? high ga$ price$

Isaw a webshot of an outbound highway, absolutely packed. The inbound was empty. Why not make both sides outbound?

Wish all you folks good luck.

my bruthah in law and his family and pets left new orleans this afternoon. it took them 6 1/2 hours to get to slidell, which is normally a 30-45 minute drive. and their running out of gas now. what happens if they told evryone to evacuate and they got stuck in there cars when the hurricane hits? whew...

i juss herd the traffic is moving now. maybe they finally opened up both lanes of the interstate to get peeple movin.

rd, a hurricane cant kill mardi gras. mite wipe outta the city tho.

I have an Aunt out that side but we haven't heard from her. Hopefully she's out of town.

Been through a few while living in the Caribbean and they're not fun.

Albert, did you leave Edna out there? I don't think any hurricane could blow her away

hi lady g,

edner likes hurricanes. the big wind caint make her budge and she gotsa wind of her own.

nothing to slow down those hurricanes in the carribean -- i agree its no fun. i was in a boat anchored offshore of san salvador in the bahamas, right where hurricane bob started. when i think about it everyting starts movin. the only reason we dint crash into shore was the anchor got caught on an underwater cable when it was draggin. which made it tough to haul in the anchor the next day. i had to dive in and free it from the cable.

Hey Albert, is there any way we kin feed Edna a big bowl of beans, or chili or somethin and position her derriere. against the hurricane winds? Might jus be enough ta counter-act the storm?http://www.deephousepage.com/smilies/nixweiss.gif

This is a really bad thing in Lousiana and Mississippi. I hope y'all can find a way to kick in a little to this one. We've got refugees here in Southeastern Texas who might not be able to return home for weeks. And then many of them won't have jobs or even lodging to return to. There are displaced folks everywhere along the Gulf Coast.

I've seen a lot of storm damage, to include flooding, but this is unbelievable.

I was at home repo today and older man was buying about 30 window units and 3 pallets of gas cans and about 20 generators. he was sending them to ne worleans as a donation. I was like wow.

If somebody knows of a good, direct channel for some aid, let's hear about it. Like maybe if there's something there in Houston, John, where you know it can go immediately toward helping the people that're moving up there.

I know there's no way to do anything in the disaster area directly at this point, but I'm all for helping the people who can't even go home.

Sounds like this is gonna be a bad one for quite some time. :(

don't know about "direct" channels, but from what I've heard from some sources I respect, these folks are very good. According to their financials, about 91% of donations actually gets put to work (that sounds pretty "direct"). and they can do a lot more with $1 than you or I. They also have some sites accepting goods, but like most charities right now, cash is king. :)

Take your pick. (http://www.fema.gov/press/2005/resources_katrina.shtm)
Several links on that page. I think more than anything they need cash. Let them decide what to get. And pray...if you believe.
