Hi, I am repairing an exterior brick entry because the mortor has washed out over time. I would like to know if there is something that will hold up better than just plain mortar, maybe there is a sealer that would protect it from washing out. Thanks, Terry

Terry, welcome aboard. I am going to move you to the restoration forum where the specialists regarding sealers etc hangout.
Hang tight, i'm sure somebody will take care of you before the day is through :)

Hi Terry, is this brick on the floor, or wall? If it's on the floor, and getting cleaned with an acidic cleaner,or dirt is getting tracked on it, and ground in,or it's getting swept, and hosed down a lot,i'm afraid that's a lot of abuse.Moxie international makes a good brick sealer...Moxie 1300.Stone tech above at the TYW store makes a heavy duty stone sealer, that may work well. After you retuck the joints, and clean the brick up you might try one of these. :)

Yes it is the walkway leading up to the front door. It is exposed to the weather and foottraffic. The Moxie sealer sounds like what it needs for some added protection. Thanks for the help Dave.

Sometimes bricks will come loose but still remain in place since they are so thick but the sight movement when walking on them will eventually cause the grout to come loose. This might be part of your problem. :)

Are you in a cold climate? If you are, the mortar is probably popping from freezing and thawing expansion. I live in an old brick house and where there is any horizontal surfaces the mortar will be prone to this because water sits on there, soaks in, freezes and expands. Too many cycles and bye bye mortar. I would seal both the mortar joints and the brick also with a good masonry sealer.

I'm not familiar with the brands mentioned in prior post, but they should do the job. If they are not available in your area, call a brick and block supply yard and they should be able to reccommend a good sealer.

Butt them like in this walk, just mortar the outside ones, this walk is 14 years young, no worries.:)
