I just had granite installed in my kitchen. I did the water test and it did not soak in. But the installer it was not sealed and that was something I needed to do. Regardless, I would like to seal the tops simply for piece of mind that it is done. Is it bad to seal tops if they are already sealed? I see several different stonetech products, which one should I use? Cleaner and sealer. How much sealer will i need? tops are 65sf. Procedure, coats, waiting time between coats, waiting time to dry????????? Thanks for pointing me in the right direction guys!

Michael, do you know the name of the stone..sometimes it's harmful, and useless to seal some stones. :)

Michael - Type of stone would be useful.

What we mean that unnecessary sealing is not good is this: if the sealer has no pores to enter to 'clog' as they are designed to do, then they may hang around on the top of the surface of the non porous stone and haze it up and look ugly, particularly if an amateur applies them and doesn't understand how much you hafta wipe like a madman.

That could make the stone look worse, which you would have paid good money to achieve.

At best, you would successfully remove 100% of the useless sealer from the stone.....which is where you already are.

If the water test told you the stone is not porous, relax! You made a good choice!

Hi Michael :)

Do you have any scraps of the stone (a cutout, cutoff of splash, anything)?

If so, we can give you more tests. Otherwise, leave it alone.

Pictures or a name would help.

Hi Mike

If it is Giallo Ornamental and it doesn't absorb water - the stone must have been sealed at some time. Was your installer also the fabricator?

I know when we fabricate materials that need sealing, we seal it at the shop.

GO is great for a kitchen and normally does need sealing, but wait 'till it starts absorbing water again before applying more sealer.

Maintain your stone by cleaning with a stone-specific cleaner and when scrubbing tough spots, use the blue on blue scrubbies made for non-stick cookware.

Enjoy your new kitchen! :D

Hi Mike :)

The only exception to what Adrianna said, is if the stone was resined at the quarry.

Generally Giallo anything needs sealing if it's not resined.

Thanks guys, the fabricator was also the installer, they must have sealed it at the shop. Once it starts to absorb just a littel water I will reseal. Thanks for the help guys.
