Hi

I need help. I have just moved into a beautiful new construction Tollbrothers house. As you can imagine I am anxious to keep it looking "new construction".

I am having a problem with the grout in my childrens bathroom. When I first viewed the bathroom. The walls and the floor had been tiled antique white with a plain tile. The grout used was also white so the floor had a wonderful uniform white look to it.

Recently I noticed the floor was getting mud prints frm dirty feet. I bought the new clorox bathroom mop and mopped a section of the floor. To my horror I saw the grout lines turning a dark grey which gives the floor a dirty look. YOu can imagine the contrast between white and then grey grout ughhh.

I wasn't sure if this was happening because they did not seal my grout. I tested out a portion of the grout by dabbing water on the grout to see if that also turns the grout grey and it didn. My husband assured me that the next day it would be dry and look fine but this hasn't happened.

I think I need to seal the grout before this happens again. I don't think it was sealed in the first place becasue I tried scraping with my nail and some of the grout came off.

Please tell me the best way to keep this grout looking bright white the, the way it was when I moved in just a week ago.

Is grout supposed to change color when it comes in contact with water. I have no technical expertise. Please advise me on a product I could purchase from Home Depot to correct this problem.

Hi Caroline, Welcome! :)

If you must purchase the sealer from HD, then AquaMix Sealers Choice 15 is the product you want (if they supply it at your local store).

If you can wait a few days, then you can have some product delivered to your front door, froum our TYW Store. In that case, I recommend Stone Techs Heavy Duty Stone Sealer. While you're at it, consider some All Purpose Tile & Stone Cleaner to maintain your tile and grout with.

Is your grout totally clean now? If not, you may also need some tile & stone specific high alkaline cleaner (such as Stone Tech's KlenzAll).

It's going to take a while for your white grout to harden and become fully cured.

Most grouts do darken (if not sealed), when exposed to water.
