Hey guys,

Ok, I finally got the guts to start grouting my project (700 sq/f over 4 rooms), but I think I made a mistake. The wife and I just finished, and she is cleaning with the sponge (after about a 10-15 min. wait). The grout seemed unusually hard and lumpy (then again, it's my first time, so I wouldn't know), which made it hard to work into the joints. I did as the bag said, 5 lb. of grout with 400 ml. of distilled water. It seemed to hard when I mixed it in the bucket, but since I read here that you had to be really careful about adding too much water, I thought maybe that was normal.
In any event, we finished after quite a bit of elbow grease. So, here are my 2 questions: 1) Is it normal for the grout to be so hard, or should I maybe add a few mor drops of water?
And 2) how long should I wait before using the dry piece of cloth on the tiles to get rid of the white haze?
As always, I thank you in advance for your time and advice.

Mix it up to the consistency of a thick milkshake Robert. And don't try to grout too much at a time. For first time grouters we recommend 15 to 20 SF at a time until you really get the hang of it. Go after that white haze as soon as the grout has set up enough such that you don't drag it out of the joint. Can't tell you how long that might take, time will varry but I would begin checking it say after the first hour.

Hi Robert :)

It is not uncommon to add a little extra water (due to site conditions, as we don't live in a laboratory). More important, is to be consistant with your batches. Also, don't add water after the original batch has been mixed.

Sounds like you can use the cloth now. :D Seriously, the sooner you remove the grout haze the better. Sometimes we throw a little neutral pH cleaner in the final wash water.
