View Full Version : How to clean dark brown grout?

Experts... I have a new home with dark ceramic tile and dark brown grout in a large kitchen and two bathrooms. The builder did a very poor job of a "final clean" on the floors before we closed. Now it's up to me to finish their job. I must admit I have only owned homes with off white grout on which I used bleach cleaners. Although the bleach cleaners worked wonders in the past, I'm assuming I cannot use the same stuff on this new dark grout. Is it possible to use such cleaners as dish soap or must I buy a specific type of cleaner to do the job? ANY HELP you can send my way would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much! ...Yet another New Home Owner...

Hi NewHomeOwner, Welcome! :)

Did your house give you a first name? :shades: :D

Can you post a picture of your project? Please don't use dish soap. As a minimum, pick up some neutral pH cleaner for general cleaning and maintenance. An alkaline cleaner is good for stubborn soil, oil, and grease. An acidic cleaner is good for restoration cleaning (or poor initial removal of excess grout haze).

Welcome, Person Who Hasn't Told John Her Name. :)

The builder did a very poor job of a "final clean" on the floors before we closed. Now it's up to me to finish their job. I don't know the whole situation, of course, but may I suggest you call the builder and invite him to have that floor cleaned to your satisfaction? If there is something on the floor/grout that proves very difficult to remove, perhaps even something that is so difficult to remove that the grout is damaged or stained in the process, it would be a good idea for that to be his problem, rather than yours.

A homeowner should not hafta accept a new house that requires significant cleaning. That's just part of the final punch-out. :shades:

My opinion; worth price charged.

Homeowner -

Listen to cx and doitright. They are right.

How do I know for sure that they are right? That is very simple.

If I agree with them, they are right. See? :)
