This is my first time tiling and my first time posting a question on the site. Of course, since it’s my first time tiling, I made a mistake and I’m hoping all of you can help me fix it. I tiled a bathroom floor and shower walls with a beige, polished marble and grouted with unsanded beige grout. Since there was a slight grout haze on the marble, I rinsed it with a solution of 50/50 vinegar and water. However, the solution must have been a little strong or I didn’t wipe it with water fast enough because it ate away the polish on the marble. There seem to be streaks on the marble, the shine is very dull, and in areas where the solution dripped, it completely etched into the marble. Is there any way I can restore the shine to the marble and in areas where it is etched, can I restore the polish? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mary

Hi Mary and welcome,

I am sorry about that.

The only way is to repolish the stone. The is a process that involves various levels of sandpaper and lots of experience.

I would get in touch with a restoration professional as soon as possible.

Hi Mary, Welcome! :)

I'm sorry to hear about your error.

What part of the country are you located?

For anyone reading this post, vinegar and marble don't mix. Vinegar is acidic and reacts with the calcium carbonate in the marble. Result - instant degradation of polish (etching of stone).

I am located in the south suburbs of Chicago, so I am actually not to far from Mundelein.

I don't think my problem is big enough that I have to resand and repolish everything. There is still some polish and shine on the marble, it's just not as shiny as it should be since some of the polish was removed. I guess I will have to live with the larger etchings because I am sure I have to resand these. I was hoping I could use some marble polishing liquid or powder? How about the Stone Tech Stone Polish for sale in the store?

Thanks,
Mary

Hi Mary :)

To get the shine back that you want, I don't recommend the Stone Tech polish. What kind of marble do you have? :shades:

As a minimum, I would remove the heavy etches, and try a marble polishing compound.

What burb are you in? I have been known to travel.
