Cami, JC,

Where can one get Opera, the browser?

And do you still like it?

Yep- still using it! You can find Opera at http://www.opera.com/ .
Sonnie bought the ad-free version, I believe.

Love it.

Yes, I did.

For the most part I love it. I'm still figurin' out the details of it, but don't have much time. I've had it crash a couple times, but not sure where it came from. One thing bugs me sometimes, if I'm loading a page with a lot of images, the other browsers kinda load them one at a time or so until it's completed. Opera waits until loading is completed before it shows any img. Prob'ly some way to change that, too. No big deal since cable.

Support folks are nice, too.

Thanks, folks. My brother-in-law/techie, Dave B. will be the tester in this camp. When he gets the kinks figured out, I'll load it. I'm gettin' sick of IE.

Opera crashes on me almost once a day here at work. But I always blame that on Lotus Notes, Norton Antivirus or the Novell network drivers we run. It also does funny things with the company firewall sometimes.

Other than that, though...;)

Dave called me today and said he's impressed with the speed of Opera. He's testing the one with the ad at the top. If you pay the $40, do you get an upgrade? Or do you just lose the ad?

JC

from what I know all you do is lose the ad on the top..but by doing that you gain viewable space.
Remember you can customize your browser endlessly with buttons and menu's so removing that wasted ad space really helps....me? my cheap ass still has the ad.

Oh yea you will probably have customer support also.

Wait till Dave discovers all the cool usefull features.

I can't survive without the left/right click forward and back hot keys.

JC's right,

I bought into it (good martooni night), but I really have no exceptional complaints. I mean, everytime I start to complain about something, there's a fix. Only available as a registered user, but this is really cool.

You gotta site that don't like Opera? Fine, you just tell it to look like Mozilla (Netscape) or MSIE. and walla!! the dumb shits don't know the dif.

Well, there is this ONE site that doesn't seem to appreciate the trickery, but I don't visit often. And I don't doubt that there's a work-around for that, too.

Hey, the way I figure it... kinda like when I used to release stuff shareware... they'll let you try it. It's not nearly as open to virii as MSIE, and it's only forty bucks. That's only a couple twelve packs of brew. Give it to 'em and they'll do magic with the money.

Oh, sh... guess I've been cooking too long. G'nite.

JC, do you surf a lot with full screen? (F11 key) I did in the beginning, but now I just ignore the ad and only go full screen if I want to see a picture.

Sonnie- I usually set Opera to show as MSIE5- it does change how your unread threads show in some bulletin boards, though. Strange.

No I usually don't surf in full screen...I want to do it..but still have not weened myself from old habits...

Gonna have to the gonzonkas and just do it I guess. Sure is the better way to surf thats for sure.

I installed Opera last night and have been playing with it a little. In keeping with the old macho man code of not bothering with directions, I clicked off all the little offers of help. Now I am a little confused about how the thing works, but it'll come to me, I'm sure. ;)

The helps screens take the fun out of it..don't they.

John set it for forward and backwards at a click of the button.
Hold the left button down...then with it still held down click the right button and visa-versa..try it.it might already be set up for you.

First order of business...
File>>>Quick Preferences>>>refuse pop-ups! :D

Cami, saw the smiley face on that last entry, but...

I've run into problems with some sights when the pop-ups are disabled. For instance, my bank uses popup to accept my password etc, also some sights use popups to do searches from within their sight. Took me a while to figure out why Opera wasn't working, It WAS working. ;)

Yes...but being able to hit F12 and change it back and forth is soooo worth it!

Oh, of course you're absolutely right!! I love it and still learning, just wanted others to be aware of potential pitfalls, that's all. I'm rather dense when it comes to some things and it took me a few days to figger it out. Now I can refuse until I get to one of those sites, then switch...way cool!

Yes- sometimes takes me a sec or two to realize that if I'm not seeing a linked pic or option box, it's probably a pop-up and I need to switch.

Today's tip for little print and old eyes:
Hit your plus key on your number pad to make fine print and teeny pics bigger. Use the minus key to reverse the process.

Sonnie,

If I did bank online (I don't) and my banker threw pop-ups at me, I'd find a new online bank. ;)

I do see your point, though, for legitimate stuff.

Yeah, well, I live two blocks from my nearest branch, you'd think they could get more convenient. One of their competitor's for instance has a branch 50 yards from my front door!!!

Anyway, I mostly just get balances and find out which checks boun--- uh cleared daily. Deposits are tough on puter. Ya gotta fold those checks so they fit in the drink holder thingy. :)

...and then there was the lady who called Dell to complain that the footswitch for her computer was not working. Turns out she was a seamstress, had the mouse on the floor...got the 8x10 of that one??? :D
