OK, you're playing golf or softball this weekend.

But try to remember what this holiday is all about: Fallen Soldiers Who Gave Their Lives to Make You Free.

These are guys who enlisted when they could have waited to be drafted; Who were drafted and showed up, when they could have dodged the draft; Who volunteered for hazardous duty, when they didn't have to; or Who Were Just in the wrong place.

They bravely charged machine gun nests, so that the rest of their platoon could live; They drew enemy machine gun fire, so that other pilots could safely strike a target; They held their B-29's straight so the bombadier could line up targets; They endured hours of depth charges just to get a chance at a torpedo attack; They hit the beaches of Normandie or the trenches of Verdun. They patrolled the rivers of Vietnam, the skies of Afghanistan, and the streets of Somalia.

Yeah, they were scared s h i t l e s s. They didn't want to die, but they did. They left widows and orphans and grieving parents. They didn't die for money. They did out of a sense of honor and duty to their flag and their country. They did so, so that you have the freedom that you have now, the freedom to play golf or softball on this day.

Please, please, on this weekend, just think about it for a minute and say a prayer for those boys in uniform that made the ultimate sacrifice for you, and they didn't even know you.

God Bless America, and God Bless All the Fallen Heros!

By God, Tom, that was downright profound. Thank you.

I'll add one- this hangs in the hallway to the office. My Dad went to Vietnam, but he doesn't talk about it.

The Soldier

It is the soldier,
not the reporter,
who has given us
freedom of the press.

It is the soldier,
not the poet,
who has given us
the freedom of speech.

It is the soldier,
no the campus organizer,
who has given us the
freedom to demonstrate.

It is the soldier,
not the lawyer,
who has given us the
right to a fair trial.

It is the soldier who salutes the flag,
who serves under the flag
and whose coffin is draped by the flag,
who allows the protester to burn the flag.

Have a safe Memorial day weekend, everyone.

Thank you Tom, for bringing to the forefront what this is all about.

Americans saluting Americans, who gave the ultimate gift, Life, for their country and you and I.

I thank you and especially all of the sons and daughters who left behind their families and freinds to remember them this week-end.

May God bless them all.

It's a shame it took 9/11 to remind many people of the debt we owe these men and women.

A recent survey iof grade school children.. what's Memorial Day about.. elicited responses such as:

It's the day we take the cover off the pool
We go to the beach
Big barbeque
