This is about as close to a tile question as it can get. I have as I'm sure alot of people have is a little bit of what looks like rust or corrosion where the ceramic tile meets my aluminum shower enclosure. Pics attached
My question , of course, is how do I clean this area up. I assume I can't do anything about the pitting into the metal but what about the surface gringe, Anys suggestion how to clean and how I would protect the carpeted floor in the bath.
Hey no comments about the carpet or you will start a WW3 in this family.
While I know this is not directly related to tile I'd appreciate any help someone can offer.
Thanks

I hate to break this to you but #1 you have hard water causing rust and #2 you have what looks from that picture to be mould. It is evident that the water pools in the corners and it could be in the substructure as well. Studies have been done that show that your shower receives between 2.5 and 414 times the amount of rainfall as your roof (depending on where you live). If people put as much effort into ensuring their tile sloped toward the drain as they do making sure the roof slopes toward the eaves, there would be a lot less mushrooms growing in bathrooms around the world. This means all tile. Soap trays, sills, seats, anything.

Hi Roger :)
How does the inside of the shower look? I see an older dapple glaze ceramic tile was used.
Get a good stiff grout cleaning brush and some stone & tile specific high alkaline cleaner. You may need to replace some of the caulk that shows signs of mold.
It appears that you have an aluminum frame on the shower door. After you scrape and clean, try a green scotchbrite pad for light restoration of the surface.
Make sure the areas are completely dry before recaulking.
Now for the carpeting! :D
Do you want to protect it during the cleaning or protect it from soiling in the bath? :shades:

I like DoItRight's answer better. The other is too scary to think of.
I'll do what you suggested and get back to you with the results. In the meantime I'm still accepting suggestions. Thanks guys

<<Do you want to protect it during the cleaning or protect it from soiling in the bath?>>
Actually for both. I was even thinking of placing a 4-inch line of tile where the shower tile meets the floor. This is on the second floor. Must I use something under the tile or can I glue it directly to the plyward floor and have the carpet cut to fit?

Hi Roger :)
Are you sure we can't provoke you into tiling your entire bathroom. It will be much more sanitary. You don't see carpet at your local health club shower area, or near the urinals do you? There's a reason for it.
If you'd be willing to post a picture of your bath floor, I'm confident we can come up with some suggestions for you.
Seriously, I wouldn't do just one 4" row of tiles in front of the shower. No, don't tile directly on the plywood subfloor.

If anyone is interested to see the inside of the shower, it's been moved to this thread:
