Okay guys, so I get this paper that comes out monthly called Value News and saw an article about a Contractor that does all sorts of things including remodelling of kitchens and baths. His partner runs the plumbing section and claims that he does not charge you until he gets to your house, and they give you quotes of everything up front. Basically the write up made these two guys sound PERFECT. I'm about ready to call them in to work on my kitchen. Tell me why I shouldn't believe the article please.
Is this just an advertising deal the contractor PAID to have in the Value News, or did someone just happen upon these fellas?
As always, I'll believe everything you all tell me because I know I'm loved, appreciated and valued as a member :D
Hugs to all,
Eli aka LG
Get a long list of references and check them. Plus check with the BBB. Take a look at the lost bid thread too. You know the old saying "If it looks too good to be true...." (Then she's probably married :) , no wait, that's not it)

Our local newspaper runs a special edition a couple of times a year featuring local businesses. There is a nice article listing the company, what they do, how long they do it and usually, glowing comments. Elsewhere in the paper is a 1/4 or larger ad for the company. Connect the dots.
Treat that just like a yellow pages listing. You know who they are and how to find them, you now have to do the investigating to assure yourself they are as good as advertised.

Eli, Go out and start looking around at new construction sites.Ask who did the work,Do your homework. You'll know who to call and you wont need referances, you will have seen thier work.Find a couple that put out good work and get prices from both.
There ya go conundrum solved(with a little leg work ;)

Todd, it's the leg work that's a bit of a problem right now, but that's good advice.
I forgot about the ad part of the article. Gee, what would I do without you guys? I get all misty-eyed thinking about it  :D
Thanks for the advice, and I'll be reporting what I find out.
In Value News the advertiser gets to write the article. Say what they want

Well Mr. Value News Contractor is coming over on Friday. No harm in meeting him and hearing what he has to say. He sounded pleasant and answered my questions. He's been in the construction business for 24 years (been here 18). Used to work in Florida. I told him I need to see his license, insurance, and also see some of his finished work. He said no problem to all of them thus far.
He also gave me some advice about remodelling, and told me that I should NOT over remodel the home to the point where I would not make my money back if we wanted to sell.
No harm in seeing what he's about, right? I won't be signing a thing UNTIL I come back and consult with my mud guys :D

Because he paid for an ad/article doesn't make him a bad guy. You still need to do your homework though.
That's a common practice in most publications of that genre'.

FF that's what I was thinking. Besides, the last one I used was recommended by my neighbours and he didn't pay for an ad. He turned out to be a con man and I haven't stopped spreading the news about him :D

Todd, you're just asking for me to slap you today :whip:
The knees are getting better, and I've been doing a lot of rehab. I push those babies, trust me. Except that sometimes I overdo a bit. I can't however run around as much as I used to just yet. I do some but when the knee starts to swell I have to back off. They tell me it takes several months, and I hope come summer I will be able to make that LONG drive to Cancun :yipee:

Well I am glad to see you are improving.but if i was your husband i'd be getting you out of this slacker mentality < :uhh: <---ducks the thrown novel>
OK ,now you can slap me :D :D :D
Seriously
Glad to hear things are getting better. Some things take longer for some than others.
Niki's Pop had knee surgery and was moving around pretty good within a few weeks.(He's a tough old guy though, like leather dredged in salt water and left to dry)
After 12 years of bladder cancer and 3 years with several DRY disks in his back,a little ol knee replacement was nothing but a thing.
Me, i'd likely be milking it for oh a year maybe 2 LOL :D

I don't think I'm doing too badly Tood, but I am very impatient and itching to start my full running around, working and hiking! There is this woman at the pool who had her meniscus repaired 16 months ago and she walks with a major limp. In fact, she moves like I did a month after my surgery. She thought that taking it easy all this time would have somehow made her knee better :bang: Dummy. And she is way older than I am...36 :D

So did you start the spreadin of the word with the neighbor that recommended the bozo? Good for you tell everyone you know about the bum, start with the BBB, then your lawyer.
