Randy,
It's a dangerous road you have set out upon. Tread lightly and look over your shoulder often. Paypal.com is a very usefull service and I haven't heard that it's unsecure in any way. I routinely check my bank statements (every few days) to make sure that my accounts aren't being run up by Russian gangsters or pimply-faced college kids from MIT. Just got 15 pounds of loose glass tile yesterday that I ordered a week ago. I had planned to call on Monday if it hadn't showed up by then. I try to allow 15-days for shipment before I double-check with any vendor.
Welcome to the 21st Century and beyond!,

Didn't anyone else feel a little freaked out the first time they ordered something over the internet?

You did everything just right Randy, now you have to wait and see can John ship it right. ;)

No sarcasm at all Randy. Which is actually a bit odd coming from me. :) I got my signed book from MR. Bridge lickety-split, so I've got complaints at all on that end. I was just validating your caution. It's a dangerous world out here in the ether and it's always a good idea to make sure you don't have a malicious shadow lurking to cause you harm. Chacking your statements and using only secure and credible transaction methods are two of the best ways I've found to avoid internet neer-do-wells.
Best of fortunes,
Shaughnn

Jim........That contraption looks like one of those ancient things that used to cut peoples head off with............or a cheese slicer or something.......I dunno.......it says something about cheese to me. :uhh:

Dave, I forgot that I have a P.O box #370........hope you catch that before you ship 'er off.

If you see this thread John, i remember reading that you said that you sign all your books , so I'm expecting you to write something a little funny in there. Actually could you write something a little stupid funny.......you know........kinda silly funny. Thats just the kinda guy I am! :) :yipee:

And, as always, beware of any email that says you must follow such and so link, enter your personal info, or else your account is in jeopardy. Instead, always hand type the URL (really URI but who cares) into the location bar and go there directly, rather than follow a miscellaneous link in an email.

Nothing wrong with being cautious with your dinero and your credit info, Randy, nothing at all. I do recall the first time I pewt my credit card information on an internet site, and I'll admit a substantial amount of discomfort. But in conversations with moderately clear-thinking persons known to me, I was quickly convinced that what I'd just done what a whole hellofa lot more secure than giving the damn card to a teen-aged clerk in a brick-and-mortar store and lettin' him pass it through his machine and keep a paper receipt of the whole transaction. How much worse could it get, eh?!!

I have gone from that initial unease to the point that I can recite my CC number from memory, including the little extra numbers onna back for added security, so much online shopping do I do. It's easy, it's convenient, it gives you access to a whole world of parts and equipment and tools and devices that you would never even know were available if you only shopped in town. And the PayPal thingee is another convenient money spending option that allows you to catch some very interesting bargains on places like eBay.

It also allows you to spend a lot more money every year, so don't be no skeerdy cat. :D

My opinion; worth price charged.

Thanks for that little bit of reassuring info Kelly, I appreciate that. You know how it is though......anything different is a little scary. :uhh:
Dan.......I have no worries of anyone buying a new target, felker, dewalt or even a plasplugs...........I'm still wondering if theres enough in there to pay for the book! :uhh: :yeah: :yeah: :yeah:

RandyL, wasn't trying to make you nervous, just aware. Personally, while I try to take care about Internet purchases, I've made quite a decent share of tangible and intangible purchases online, have yet to encounter an online purchase problem WRT receiving the goods. Of course, I use a $50 cap of liability card for such purchases, and while there are horror stories, just take care, use a decent card, breath easy. Of course, I cannot say whether you would ever be one of those horror stories, but I can say that I haven't yet had any receive the goods problem. Just use your judgment; if it doesn't feel right, don't do it.

Thanks for your purchase, Randy. I like those Canadian dollars now that the American buck is headed down. :)

As to online transactions, all the advice you've gotten is good. In that light I would like everyone to know that our store operates on a "secure" site, and our dues are paid up. Further, we don't store credit card info. As soon as the transaction goes through we lose the card number. ;)

There is a way you can tell when you go onto a secure site. Watch the protocol. Instead of the usual http://, you will see https://. That added s means "secure." In our store you will see it as soon as you click the "checkout" button. :)

HA...just playing with ya Sherry............well...........not really....... :)
But sreiously.........I don't think I could be steered wrong here......... just a bunch of good guys!

But.......I've often wanted to take advantage of other purchases over the internet and was wayyyyyy....too worried of who I was passing my info too............( or shall I say.....my wife's HAHAHA!)

I do have a good quiestion though I think............how secure is secure? Seriously,, for me to pass on a C.C number here .......fine..........but what about other sites.........where does that info go......or is it just all trust.........?
Because if it is all trust, then that really is my last purchase.............Gee........the more I type,, the more I don't like internet buying............... :uhh:

One thing you can do is to set up a specail credit card that you only use online. A little extra trouble but have the credit limit set low if you worry. Like many others I have spent many $$$ on the net with no trouble.

A friend of mine had a new ford show up on his company CC a few years ago. He had never used it on the web, so what CX said about brick and mortar.

If you find something you like on a site, do a little checking on the site around the net etc. In a lot of cases if a site is "bad" you can find out about it online.

John Bridge, true where https means the secure transfer of info, over the wire if you will. It has nothing to do with whomever stores, or what method is used to store, such info once received, even if you do not have access to such, but maybe that's what you meant. Techie me.

Sherry, I know exactly how the process works, having set it up at the get go. Of course Techie Dave handles it now, and he has made vast improvements. :)

I am addressing non-techies here, people who don't really care which page you're on. ;)

Well over a grand Randy. They dont give puters away you know, especially if you want any bells and whistles.

The time is coming soon when another new puter will be needed.Last year I rebuilt mine locally and upgraded it to a 2.4 with 512 megs of Ram.
This will become Niki's computer(her company will buy it from my company)
I will upgrade to a 3.4 with 1 gig of ram and will be adding a software package to improve office productivity.
This of course means i'll be here but not posting as much as i play with my new tools :)

I'm thinking June or July.I am also considering getting a simple refurbished laptop for the truck and a portable printer to go with it.Job change orders will be easier to handle on site As well as several other advantages i can think of with the availabilty of portable computing :)

I've made lots of purchases online over the last 8-10 years or so. Never been burned, always received the products ordered.

I always -

1. Purchase by credit card. I use a single card for my internet purchases and double-check my statement each month.

2. Order from established sites. Research the company you are buying from.

If you are concerned about online purchasing, google "tips for safe online purchasing". you'll find plenty of material from the BBB, FTC, ConsumerReports, etc. to help you shop safely.

Credit Card companies also give you protection from people using your credit card without your permission. At least Visa does. I've had flukey things show up, I've contested the charges, and they've been removed from my card. Again, these were not from internet purchases.

I guess that has helped to give me more peace of mind as my stuff floats out there in ether-land! :)

Randy,

Have you ever ordered something over the phone, and had to tell them you card number? Did you know who the person on the other end of the line was? No different with internet purchases, or in person for that matter.

You can be anybody you want over the phone, and anybody can be listening.

With credit card fraud there is always a record of the purchase and where it was shipped to. If it happens, it takes time to straighten out, but I wouldn't worry about it.:)

The funny thing is...anyone who's terrified of giving thier card number over the internet seems perfectly comfortable giving thier credit card to a waiter at a restaurant. Here is some kid making 9,10 bucks an hour and off he disappears for a couple minutes with your credit card (where he can double swipe it....copy down the numbers, exp date and 'security code' and use it months later and you'd be none the wiser)....and most ppl dont feel the slightest concerned...thanks but I'd rather risk my card over a digitally encrypted on line billing co. Sure there's a few horror stories..but hey..thats life. Encryption is a lot safer than "Danny the waiter/gas station attendant etc".

You might see if your credit card company offers vitual card numbers. It will generate a new card number (linked to your real card) with each internet purchase and only be valid once..cannot be used again. We haven't had an online problem since.
