Sometimes a scene or a piece of something hits you in just that way that makes you stop and take another look, or perhaps reflects a piece of a moment. Sometimes they are intangible and other times they are very real. Blah blah blah... Hey man here's a pic of one of those times! I figured I should drop it here since (as someone sort of mentioned) they don't really have anything to do with questions about or the act of 'tiling'. :D

You've got an eye for the filmworthy. I love taking pics...believe it or not, since i've never posted one...i've got an old Olympus om-1.I used to do a lot of macro. My wife knows nothing of photography, and yet she was on the beach when a seagull tried to get her sandwich, and caught a pic of it with the sun forming a fuzzy circle around it, with an instamatic i bought her, and it was one of the best pics i'd ever seen, which confirmed to me that God hates me! :)

Hey Shuttebug............is it talent or is it that you have to much time on your hands............ :D :D :D ..Just kidding.....the pictures that you've posted lately are perfect picture for a persons website.... I see to many tile websites posting picutres..........which is good...but I think that a picture like you just posted is art on its own,......... that can be used to show a persons artistic talents....good work.....really! :)

I'm in process of buying a digital camera, was looking for a leica, what would you recommend?

I bought a Sony Cybershot 5.1 megapixel recently, it takes excellent photos
and will take a few lenses including a wide angle lense. I look forward to
getting the wide angle lense for those hard to photograph bathroom projects.
Price paid was $300 at Circuit City

One of the better sites for digital camera reviews....

www.dcresource.com (http://www.dcresource.com/)

Extensive reviews including sample images taken with the camera being reviewed. Very helpful in deciding on a camera.

This is a good site too, here's a link to the review for the camera I have...

Thank to Dave Misevich
These are the instructions that Dave sent me in Feb of 03 and I have keep the email. It is real easy. The problem is remembering from time to time. I can't and had to save.
Program you want to use to resize the photo for placement on the JB forum.
Most computers with Windows XP will download from the camera in a My Pictures file.
Chose the picture from the My Pictures file and give it a new name and save it with the new name. You will now see that this picture is in the file with two different names.
Double click on the picture you just renamed.
Useing the mouse select a box around the most important part of the picture.
Cropping out extra stuff is a great way to reduce the size of the pic.
Go to "Edit" (tool Bar) and choose "Crop Selection". Now reduce the size of the remaining picture. "Image", "Resizing/Resample". In the set new size box, set the larger of the two dimensions to around 400. Now do a "File", "Save as"and enter a new name (always keep the larger original) Before clicking the "Save" button, click the options button and reduce the "size quality" to some value like 70% and click "ok" Then save the file. Use file manager to check the size. If it's still too big, go back in Infanview and use "save as" again tnd reduce the save quality again. Keep doing this until you get the file size you want.

Hope that this helps one and all and maybe one of the official folks will add to library if it would help being there. Again thanks Dave

Dave, isn't that just about the way it goes too! You're probably underestimating your own photos because you took them yourself.

Randy, Yeah, I have too much FREE TIME! And if I could stand up straight and stretch out my arms again I'd show ya how much! (Ugh, where's my spine?!?) Actually, I'm off work right now so I do have a lot of time. Some day I'll actually get all the photos organized too and put them on a site. Anybody wanna help?

I just happened to set the tiles in that sunlit spot, and on my next trip into the room took a double take and wahlah! There's other's of that stack of tiles of course. :D

Macro photos are great and they don't really take a lot of talent to do. It's mostly about a low aperture and a slow speed and of course a stable surface. But I also like weird stuff, and things that have hard angles. I have a friend who likes photography too and he's always ragging on me about my 'view' of things. I haven't had as much success with landscape photos though; they're not bad but not always great either.

Here's a 'self portrait' of sorts that I took yesterday in that same sunlit window.

Ansel Adams has a photo of a graveyard with the sun going down, that i can stare at for hours, and i read that he was driving down a road..saw the graveyard...and told his son..stop the car we gotta hurry..and ran up the hill, and as soon as he got set up, snapped the pic, and two seconds later the sun dropped and the shot would have been lost. He spent days in the darkroom getting it right..and it's magnificent...........BUT MY WIFE AIN"T ANSEL ADAMS,and there's no good reason for her to have gotten that picture! :D :D :D But i'm not bitter!Where i grew up in Illinois,on a farm, there's a graveyard down the road where some graves are from the 1800s, and many graves have picures of the deceased from the 20s,and 30s,they're fascinating,i would love to have the ability to turn them into a haunting montague, of some sort.Kind of rambled there didn't i? :) Now that i got the digi, i'm going to take some pics myself..photography is a passion, but the digi has eclipsed me,and i'll have to catch up. :)

JB - Jack's picture is art - just ask his kids:D

My picture is not art. That is my beloved stepson with the grinder. There was nothing wrong with the steps. We just made him take them out and grind everything down because he killed the duck. shutterbug
03-01-2005, 10:43 PM
Hmm, looks like the oil painting effect :D

Actually I was thinking of a whole different perspective mostly since you've seen that photo over and over you need a new view. Like this... (hope you don't mind). The border draws you away from the outer distractions into the main subject. The main subject is not really so much your son as much as it what he's doing. I removed the shadow from the flower pot too and added a little light to direct your eye to his hands. Also cropped it so that the area I'm drawing attention to is on the "tic-tac-toe" grid.

I'm not a pro. Those are simple things I learned about in a book that helps the overall look of the picture.

Maybe you like, maybe you don't. Art is undefined.

jd77
03-01-2005, 11:01 PM

Well, let's see I think these two will are real good starters :devil2:. I had to compress the files by quite a bit which does not yield very good quality pictures. The files are much larger because of the extra manipulating I did. I did a couple others with just the book in B&W and another of the same with the flames added. I also have a 'smoke' effect, but I really gotta get something else done today :)

the chance to use photo shop 7 on a trial dl basis and loved it. really fun to

That's one heck of a grin you got goin there! No, Jack actually I just now went through the photo album. I'm sure I pulled it up before, must not have been any pictures on the last page that day and I went on to something else. There's some pretty good reading in there as well as some very nice family photos and pichers of FISH! Not sure of which there are more! :D

There's so much stuff on this site, I usually find wandering thread to thread in the main forum which often leads me to one of the pros websites where I drool over some really NICE showers :). I check in at the pro's club now and again too and find some interesting tid bits like how to sharpen your saw blade and stuff. I like the small detail information that I find here and there. Sort of like tips and tricks that make the job go smoother and look better. And then of course there's the liberry!

Just ain't enough time in the day to read it all! Speaking of reading, John's book arrived yesterday! :yipee: :yipee:

I'm using Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7. Been using Jasc for a number of years now and I guess I'm kinda hooked on it. Would be nice to have Adobe Photo Shop, but I can't see forking out $700 for a picture program! The flames are an effect too like oil painting or chrome, but you have to select the area you want the effect to be on. So basically I just drew around the book and added the effect. The flames effect came with this newest (I think it's the newest) version of PS7; found it by accident of course cause I never read the "what's new" info. Sheesh, it would have taken me a week to try to draw in all those flames! Anyway, I like the rich colors in that flame one. :D

Have a nice day!

03-06-2005, 04:24 AM
Nice work on those designs, Jack. That 2nd one appears to be a business card while the top one is kinda like letterhead or a topper for an invoice; I'm sure they are of equal importance! :D Nice even layout of the business card too. It's a wee dark with the dark letters. I like the letters and would lighten the card a hair to bring them out a bit more. And the other one is very nice work too! I'd have to assume that's your work in the background? Nice 'cool blue' lettering too.

Bill, well it's good to know that I'm not missing anything! I've used my brother's Adobe program a few times but it's ancient... like 8 years old at least so it didn't really do that much more than my program; and it did it a lot more confusingly too. I believe it had macros on it though which would be nice to have programmed effects there at my fingertips, but I've been playing with pics for a while now long now and can recreate them similiarly each time. Jasc gets a little better with each release and I'm certainly not disappointed with its performance. I'm curious why you have one of each program though. What's your wife do?

I made a Christmas card this year from one of my downtown photos. Of course I added some stuff and changed the entire thing to look hand drawn with pencil. It was still rather neat because it came from a photo though :)

Since we're talkin about programs anyone out there got a recommendation for a photo organizer program? Mine are in desperate need of catagories and key word searches and stuff. I just haven't looked into... just keep burning them to CD while trying to at least put them in folders... what a mess! :p

Happy tiling! Last day for me (this time). Then grout probably Tuesday. Seal 10 days after that I believe is the instruction... WHOO HOO!

Shutterbug-- My wife has a business, mostly on line, of making over and creating her own fashions for collectors dolls, and on her sites she gets really creative with the way ahe displays them. She's always like adobe for its versatility. Me personally, like you said, I think it's confusing to use, unless you use it on a constant basis. The reason I have PSP is that it came already installed on my laptop.

Hi Marni,

Give Jasc's Paint Shop Photo Album 5 a try. It's a pretty good photo/image organizer.

shutterbug
03-06-2005, 04:50 PM
I'm such a procrastonator! I don't know why I just don't get the one that Jasc makes. I was looking at some reviews through consumerreports.com and wherenot a short time ago and was quite impressed by MS PictureIT's features. As I recall it was the feature that allowed you to assign a rating system for your pictures. Like a 1-5 star scale. I thought that would be cool since I have a lot of angles of the same thing or vertical and horizontals of same subject that even I might be able to make some sense from my 'collection'. Problem is that one day I'll like one of my photos and next day it's so-so. Guess it depends on what mood I'm in .

But you're absolutely right! I should just get the Jasc program and start organizing! What could it hurt? It can be a gift to me for getting ALL the tile laid. YEAH!

Thanks, Joe.

Oh yeah, and I redid that poor boy that was in trouble for killing the duck. He looks much happier playing with me in the sand don't ya think?

Well, Here's the first whack at posting pics. I love taking pictures and there is never enough time to do all the things we want, but I get a chance from time to time. The night scene is a time-lapsed picture at about mindnight the last time we went camping "up north". The earth's rotation gives the stars their arcing path, while the North Star is clearly still in the upper right. The second pic is of an Indian head I carved the last time I went to my woodworking school.

Davy

Bill Vincent
03-06-2005, 09:05 PM
Kurt-- Very nice pics! Let me ask you-- that night sky pic-- how long was the aperture open for that? I've got a Canon AE-1 that I've tried to do the same thing with a 2 second openning, and it wasn't even close.

BTW-- Thank you very much for your comments a couple of weeks ago. :)

Tool Guy - Kg
03-06-2005, 09:10 PM
I have to give credit to my carving instructor "Jeff Phares" for teaching the daylights otta me. Before last October, I didn't know my arse from one of those carving pointed sharp thingies. That's my first real carving. Sure we studied and carved "study sticks" for a few days beforehand, but the the instructor was that good. The guy is a true cowboy, twang talkin' and all. He could put a picture in your head and show you how to break it down into a bunch of managable steps. Very fun time, very enjoyable and rewarding. Like so many other things you learn, you have new doors opening up all around you and you get the priveledge to look at the world a little deeper.

Edited to get Bill's question:
Bill, it was something like a 12-14 minute exposure 200 speed film (with a pretty small aperature). I wandered around while the shot was being taken so I don't remember exactly. The shutter is open as long as the button is depressed and I rigged up a piece of tape to hold it in - but the camera's internal penlight batteries were running low and would cause the shutter to close without me knowing. I suppose if you measure the degrees of arcing, you could take 360 degrees (full earth rotation) and devide it by whatever the arcs measure and you'd know what fraction of a day it was. I would try a 15 minute exposure and close the aperature almost all the way down (maybe 2 stops shy of the smallest opening you have) and see what that does. It would have to be awfully dark to take this shot. The sky has to be nearly black, or the picture will end up so light, it's reduculous.
And Bill...you're very welcome.

Davy

Davy, excellent. Did you just buy the "pool player" and use that as a way to self teach yourself?

Jack, I wouldn't normally consider running the base/cove on the wall like that outside of a wet area. That looks pretty sweet.

Hamilton

I suggested the slate base vs a wood base because i wasnt sure how a wood
base would look sitting on the irregular surface of slate. i imagined a terrible
caulk line where white base met the floor. everyone agreed it would look better
and we went forward with it.

Holy COW Kurt! That Indian is fanominal. How big is it, what kind of wood is it, and how long did it take to carve? Very cool.

And speaking of cool! So is the long exposure of the stars. WOW. Dang, here in the city I could never get something like that. There's way too much 'noise' at night to keep the lense open for much longer than 20 seconds :). You're using a traditional camera I assume? Very neat stuff. Thanks so much for sharing!

I must have missed that promo at the 7-11! Davy, what's your "pool player" made of? He looks so shiny. Is he modeled after you :D?

And of course Jack's work is always fanominal! Very nice! I'm assuming that's to be a pool table room?

Great stuff guys!

Davy

The tileman is made from Balsa wood, the pool player is made from pine.
I first seen the pool player at a local flea market. A man was there selling some of his carvings, some of his work was really neat and expensive. I watched him whittle on a piece of wood for a while and was amazed at how easy he made it look. He wanted 35 bucks for the pool player which I thought was too high. After I got home I wished I would have bought it. The next month the whittler was sick and not there but his wife was there selling his stuff. I asked her how much for the hippie, she said 25, so I bought it. He said the pool player/hippie took only 45 minutes to carve. :)

I was so upset about dropping my el-cheapo digital camera (Kodak CX4200)the other night (yes ruined it) that I went right onto ebay and bought myself a brand new one. Anyone have any reviews on the Minolta Dimage Z3? (http://kmpi.konicaminolta.us/eprise/main/kmpi/content/cam/cam_Product_Pages/DiMAGE_Z3) I bought that and its mate flash the minolta 2500d. Hi Marni,

I love your pictures and creative ways to transform the ordinary into the extrodinary!

The Indian head is 8 3/8" tall. To get a perspective, you may notice my left paw holding it while my right paw is clicking the picture. It is made out of butternut wood. (Wood smells kinda good when cutting it) And it took about 2 days of interrupted carving time. I think it would take about 8 hours to make another one like that.

Yep, a traditional camera is what I use for anything cool. I had photography in the first year of high school and have stayed with a manual controlled camera ever since (2.2 decades). I have kids now, so sometimes I wish I had a more automated camera to capture the quick action that takes place, but really like the ability to do whatever you want with the manual. The new digital cameras have a bunch of neat features, but still prefer the film cameras.

That night picture was taken in Northern Wisconsin and nowhere near any city lights. A few months ago, I was taking some other pictures at night and my exposure time was up around 30 minutes. You wouldn't believe how bright the pictures are. They almost look like they were taken during the day. And they were taken at close to midnight, with no moonlight. It was dark. I mean real dark. I used 100 speed film with the aperature turn all the way down for 30 minutes and the intense blue color of the sky is something else. Experimenting at night is just like painting. You start with a dark, black picture, and you "paint" with light here and there until you have your picture painted. While the shutter is open, I take my flashbulb and "paint" a blast of light on something that I want to be highlighted. Sometimes I'll use the flash 10 or 20 times for one picture to light up a distant object. All these neat exerimental pictures were done with a traditional camera and I don't have a scanner to put them here, or I'd show ya all. The night picture I showed was developed at Walgreens so I got a CD with the pictures. But the quality is crappy. The resolution doesn't do it justice.

Jack, good thinking on the irregular caulk lines you might have had with traditional baseboard. How tall did you make them? 4 1/2"ish?? Did you do anything to ease the square top edge?

Hamilton

Awfully sweet camera, Dave (the tile guy)! I dropped my last one too and broke the lens; actually it fell off the top of a beer bottle at the bar trying to get a timed group photo... live and learn :D Cripeny look at the zoom on that thing! Anti-shake... very nice. Hey here's a wonderful resource (http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/minolta/dimage_z3-review/index.shtml) I just found that gives a great review of the camera. I don't recall that site being so indepth when I researched for the digicam I have now.

Yeah, I saw your fingers holding the Indian head up after I went back to take a closer look at it. It's still neat as heck no matter what size it is! Hmm, butternut wood. Sounds like it smells good ;) Did you finish it with anything?

Yep, I like to play in the digi-darkroom, but I also like some stuff just as it is. Here's a picture of a bunch of rental bikes at a resort. Nothing changed except for a little cropping. It's one of my favorite shots from that trip I also like the b&w one I shot, but it doesn't show the rust and sand.

(Holding up right hand) I have never bullnosed slate either, I swear.

You know Jack, I was thinking the same as you and wouldn't consider bullnosing them. I think because of the shaling, I think that it wouldn't come out good, kinda like routing a chippy piece of wood with a router bit and you don't end up with a smooth edge. When I asked, I was thinking that maybe you knocked-off the corner to chamfer it a bit. But now that the others have chimed-in, we are now geniuses and will do it if we need to.

Marni, no finish on it yet. I'll be putting some concoction on it when I get around to it. Probably in 30 years when I retire (although the busiest people I know are retired.....how does that work?)

Thanks Shutterbug! Yeah I just got the camera this afternoon. Had to even leave work early just to come home and play with it! I can't believe all the functions in this cam...almost like an SLR 'cept for the fixed lens...but an equivalent 420mm zoom! its amazing. I've been running around the house all night snapping photos...learning all the functions of the cam. Definately need to get the NiMh batteries for it though! I've got the external flash coming tomorrow. That will give me a flash distance of almost 90 feet!! lol As soon as I get the hang of it and get some good shots I will post them...until then...a certain camera is calling me!

Bullnosing Slate

Careful guys, as you know slate is soft and it may spoil ya ;)

Pick your pieces for bullnosing.Tight grained are of course best.I didnt want to state the obvious but, then again ;)
I always figure what i need in L/F and pick the best tightest pieces i can find and then sort for color.I was very particular on the pieces that were to be water jetted and then Bullnosed.Screwing up a water jetted Deco was not something i would have cared for as you can imagine :)

2x2 slate or tumbled Marble etc can be bullnosed for your shower floor curb wraps also if you are doing many of these. It Looks great ;)

The photo i posted of the epiphylum or orchid cactus is not a common
cactus in the US. i took a branch from a cactus my mother has growing.
you can literally cut a branch and wait 2-4 weeks before you put it in the
dirt and it will grow with a regular watering. There is an "Epi" society in san
diego. This flower is huge, im 6'2" tall and have large hands, if i put my hand
next to this flower it is larger. The photo was taken last year on my crumby
digi camera but ive noticed some new buds growing fast in the last couple
days. I also ran across a customer i did work for who had a white flower
epi and they gave me a branch. its in its infancy but in about a year or
so i will get nice big white flowers. Ill post a better photo of the new set
of flowers with my new camera. Great thread shutterbug i hope everyone
continues to join in this is cool. :)

if you want to see more epis you can do a google search ....

Clyde, you'll have to get yourself another digi. Shoot the prices keep dropping and the megapixels keep going up! Yahoo!

Jack, you probably already know, but I figure I'd put a couple details here for anyone else interested. I looked up a couple pages about your epiphyllum or orchid cactus until I found one with some size detail. Woof, those are big. Found in the jungle from Mexico to northern South America, their flowers are 5"-8" across on average but can be as big as 15". And they hang from the trees and can reach a length of up to 200! That's a pretty hardy flower! Their colors vary depending on the environmental conditions.

Cool.

Marni, I'm assuming they are tiling their "bird bath"?

Those big honkin' tiles are PITA 36 inch long stone tiles. They fit real good on a little saw that's 1/2 the size of the tiles. :yeah: Actually, the saw took em in stride. I was surprised at how well it handled them.

The best part about stone tiles is cutting a complicated piece, then having the thing fall apart in your hands as you are carrying it back to the wall. That's my favorite. :yipee:

Those are some fine snowmen, Joe. Dang by the back yard looks like you're stuck up in the woods somewhere. No wonder you're getting cabing fever :D.

Managed to snap this one of the snowdrops this afternoon. I kept missing the sun since it was mostly overcast. But here's what I got. I'm not sure why it looks a little grainy and not very well focused. I tried using the "white metering" feature to gauge the snow which is all I can think of. I really wanted a different angle, but there's bridge construction stuff everywhere in my front yard. Yuk.

Shoot. Ya'll sure know how to put some tile down! I hope my shower turns out near that kind of quality. If I ever get the plans solidified. I just bought a fujifilm E500 finepix camera. Anyone know if its a good camera? Its seems good. Came witha docking station, rechargable batteries, an extra 64mb card. Is working well so far. THink I'll take a pic of the big ford later tonight if I get home when its still light out.

Hee hee hee, Jack, that's quite a character ya got there! My doggies wouldn't sit that still even do that for a even for a Scooby Snack!!!

Randy, it all depends on what you want a camera for... here's a pretty informative review (http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/E500/E5A.HTM) on your camera. As the owner it might be informative, but I didn't read it all :D (it's long). Can't go too wrong with 4 megapixels... it's all the other bells and whistles that up the price. I'll bet it takes quality 4x6 and 5x7's and is certainly fit for uploading to the web. Never used a docking station so I don't know nuthin about it.

jgleason
03-15-2005, 11:11 AM
Not a bad camera. I skimmed the review and looked carefully at the test shots. The optical zoom is a little low for my tastes (3.2x). If I can't have a digital SLR then I want something with a big zoom, like a 12x.

Of course, it all depends on what kind of pictures you plan on taking and all that.

No opinion on the docking station, I use a card reader. Pop the card out of the camera and into the reader, drag and drop the files from the card to the computer's hard drive. Nothing to it!

shutterbug
03-15-2005, 12:11 PM
I get people ask me about the docking stations. Someone want to testify to liking them or disliking them? Are all docking stations also print stations? You've seen em the kind that print a 4x6 right from the docking station? I was never interested in them but wonder if people like that feature or not.

12x zoom is pretty hefty I assume you're talking all optical too! You ever use the digital zoom? I've taken a couple in full 8x optical plus the 4x digi-zoom that turned out half way decent after manipulation in the digi-darkroom but usually they're too grainy and blurry to use.

jgleason
03-15-2005, 01:32 PM
12x, all optical! :D

My Current Digital Camera (http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/panasonic/dmc_fz10-review/index.shtml) . (Of course, I opted for black, not silver)

I have used the digital zoom too. Here's a series of shots. I was appr. 15' away. 1st image is at 3x optical, second at 12x optical, 3rd at 36x digital. Handheld, no retouching. Only thing I did was resize all images to 30% of the original size to fit on the forum. No cropping. I also saved as jpg at 40% compression.

Sweet Joe. Great clarity even at full digital zoom and still shoot with a small aperature while zoomed! Mine doesn't have the anti-shake on it; wish I'd known how sensitive it really was before buying it. If I were to get another camera I would definitely get that feature. Cool, comes with a lens hood too which comes in handy. Beats the piece of roofing paper I keep curled up in my case :D.

Ok, here's my test. I have to say I'm kinda of surprised that they are as clear as they are being taken with no tripod :). I did however use the flash which I normally don't do so it upped the speed from 1/6.6 of the no flash pic to 1/60 at no zoom and both max optical and digital at 1/125. To gauge the difference between them I had to switch to high resolution instead of max or best which is shot in RAW because I can't enable digital zoom with RAW capture, but they are pretty close for on screen comparison I think. The pictures were taken at a distance of about 10'. In JPG high format I resized to 23% of regular size and squished each by only 10%. Nice camera Joe... :)

I recently purchased my first digital. Like you I was really swayed by the Leica glass. 12X optical is really at the edge of technology for a non SLR. The 35 mm equivalent is something like 35-450 mm, and F-2.8 all the way, end to end. And Image Stabilization as well. :)

I somehow managed to convince my darling wife that I needed the FZ-20, so I ended up with 5 mega pixel version in Black. All I can say, is that Leica lens is .....well, I don't know how to describe it! Nothing I have seen (digital) is even close to it. I am certain there are some other fine lenses out there, but nothing yet with optical range and features of this one.

I looked at many different models, but like my Nikon film cameras, it always came down to the lens.

If you can't afford a digital SLR---you really need to look at these models.

:) :)

 That's a lot of squill! I love those blanket pictures like that! The biggest patch I have is only about 12"x12". Must be cause I keep splitting them so I get a splash of color here and there in early spring. Yeah, actually got dirt IN my lens shooting the squill and the crocuses. I was !!! The lens wouldn't extend and there was grinding sound. Fortunately several (and I mean several!) hard taps around the lens knocked all the dirt out and it operates fine again. Whew!

Heres a new yellow flower i planted this last weekend after i got home
from lake havasu. Also included is a full shot of my epiphylum in mid bud.
should be blooming in a week or 2. There is a young white flowered epi in the
pot to the right that is almost a year old. With epi's you can take a cut
branch and lay it out to dry for 2 weeks or so and replant it and it will still
grow strong. If anyone is interested in having a clip from the big epi send
me a pm and ill mail you a branch. Its a very sturdy plant but takes a couple
years to produce the enormous flowers ill be posting again in a couple weeks.
This time photos will be taken on my new 5 mp digi camera. :)

shutterbug
04-08-2005, 07:58 PM
That yellow flower looks similiar to the tiger lillies I have around here. Is it a lilly variety? I like yellow flowers :) Shoot Jack, I'm not sure what I'm looking for in the big Epi plant picher. Are the buds the little reddish colored things that are growing near the end of the leaf? Like the one I see on the second leaf from the top on the left side?

Your new 5 megepixel is on the way? Ahh, can't wait to see what kind of shot you come up with for your prized Epi...

Will the plant survive indoors in a cold climate?

Hamilton
04-08-2005, 08:13 PM
They(epi's) like to be root bound with indirect sunlight so im sure indoors
would be fine. The photos i posted are from the the 5 mp but im still learning
how to get nice shots. My wife says the yellow flower is some kinda of lilly.
I tossed the tag and forget what it is lol :) The buds are the little red things
coming off the leaves here and there. Ive counted 16 in all but you probably
cant see them all.

shutterbug
04-08-2005, 11:31 PM
Oh oops, sorry didn't know that was the 5 banger camera. For the close up shots you might try setting your dial or button or menu (what ever you have) to the flower picture; almost every digi camera has a flower on it :) That might help, but it also might slow the shutter speed and cause blur. YOu'll figger it out.

Shoot. 16 buds. I remember how big the flowers are so you better weight that plant down so it doesn't fall off the sill when the blooms burst out!

Marni or anyone else familiar with digital cameras,
Does anyone know of a camera that either has a wide angle lens built into it or one that can be attached? I went to the local Worst-Buy and seems that the only chance of getting wide angle abilities is to buy a mongo-expensive camera.

04-15-2005, 11:00 AM
Musta missed this post before. I dont really know that much about diffrentr cameras, but like Jack said, theres ones out there that wont cost you a months salry to buy. As thr digi market grows so do your choices -like everything else that becomes popular.

Heres a wide angle article (http://www.realtor.org/rmomag.NSF/pages/techwatch200410182?OpenDocument) that lists some mfgrs offeriung wide angle that I found through google. I'll have to look at those cameras in that link I just refered to allso to learn a bit about built in wide angle features. ZR==Remenber to keep in mind when looking at a camera that the add on lenses will require you ti purchase both a converter ring as well as the lens itself. Im sure that the two together will run you at at least $125 and probably more. Sometimes you can purchase the camera with additional optional packages that will include some or all of zoom, wide-angle, the converter ring, lens hood... ti name a few off the top of my head.

pardon my type-o's

Tool Guy - Kg
04-16-2005, 02:40 AM
Thanks for the article, Marni. Good to know manufacturers are on their way to making more options for wide-angle lenses.

I have a wide-angle lens from a seriously old digital camera. It was so old, you actually stuck a floppy disk in there! :D I'm not kidding. And the resolution was so "craptacular" (stole that one from Shaughnn :yeah: )that a floppy could hold about 50 pictures. I gave the camera away, but kept the lens. I'm gonna go check out that camera Jack has and see what else is available.

shutterbug
04-16-2005, 06:10 AM
OMG, a FLOPPY?!? Well, I guess technology had to start somewhere. I remember booting computers using a 5 1/4 floppy and there was no such thing as a hard drive!

John Bridge
04-16-2005, 02:53 PM
Kurt,

I bet that old camera was a Sony. Reason I think I know is that I've still got mine. Resolution is 640 which isn't bad unless you want to print something larger than a postage stamp. :) I loved that camera. Still do. When it was new it cost over a thousand dollars, and that was a real thousand dollars back then. ;)

The floppies were really handy though. Pop 'em in the computer and you had your pics. You could just leave them stored on the floppy.

jgleason
04-17-2005, 06:28 AM
Hey John,

That would be a Sony Mavica camera I believe. Great camera at the time. resolution was about 1/2 Megapixel or so. Perfect size for posting online!

Tool Guy - Kg
04-17-2005, 01:09 PM
YEP! It was a sony. You're right, anything bigger than a postage stamp and she started getting fuzzy. I love hearing the floppy spinning around for a few seconds after you shoot a picture while it is being transeferred to the disk. Now that I think of it, I remember seeing this camera at Office Depot less than a year ago. It was still $299, if you can believe that.

The cool thing is that screw-on wide angle lens fits my camcorder. Makes it much easier to record job details. Don't use the camcorder much anymore. But when you have a big remodel and a ton of details, you can narrate and shoot pictures simultaniously. Handy later on when putting a bid together.

John Bridge
04-17-2005, 06:05 PM
Mavica is correct, but Sony still uses that brand. :)

Many of the pictures on my real web site were shot with that camera. Some of them you can tell it. ;)

Well, Mother Nature did her thing and brought us SNOW on April 24. The (hopefully) last winter blast isn't quite over with and I'm hoping we continue to NOT get the estimated snowfall prediction.

While I'm not happy seeing my poor Daffodils freeze and wither before thier time, this late blanket of snow made an interesting backdrop for a couple pictures. (I'd have spent more time out there but froze my tootsies off :)). Anyway, I came up with this keeper which I think looks kinda neat.

Thanks Clyde! Looks like we scooted by without any big accumulation. That's one of the nice things about being close to downtown... the couple extra degrees warmth keeps some of the snow away. :) All we got was about 1" of Slurpie consistancy accumulation on the grass, decks, roofs but hardly any on the cement. Guess we lucked out! Daffodils weren't so lucky, but maybe the 50+ weather today will help.

You guys really know how to hurt a guy, and Patti's not happy about it either. :(
Even looks like you might have a Mack 'n Jack in front of you there. Just get all that crappy weather cleared up before we get up there in June. :)

You can tell your Patti to just look at the picture and drool. It is all empty calories until she gets back up here and has to eat in person and not think about how good it was by looking at the picture of Shaughnn and I enjoying those fish&chips. :yeah:
