Did anybody catch the hockey game in Detroit the other night? Any opinions?

I have an opinion....
http://www.freep.com/bookstore/image2.jpg
...or at least I would if I could stay up past the first period. Games should not start at 10:30.
(Really, I think the whole thing is fixed. Conspiracy theory, you know. How else could the Wings look like two totally different teams in just the first four games?) :D

How about the "anthem etiquette" ?
So far all opinions are vast and varied.

I don't know the whole story but if Detroit fans booed the Canadian Anthem, I am ashamed of them.
And what's going on with all the cheap downright dirty shots?

I'm with flatfloor. Canadians and Americans should be booed equally. :)

And while we're at it let's boo the Mexicans too !

No booing. Any anthem. At all. Period. Any questions?

About 2 weeks ago I took my 10 yr old son Jacob to the Skydome in Toronto( about a 3hr drive) to witness for the first time a live game. Toronto vs New York .
Before the game we went down to the field to see the players that come out to give autographs... not a Blue Jay to be found and throughout the game we were privey to many instances of arrogance, all from Toronto players.
I'm not a terrific sports fan and have always been abject
to the whole concept of "Sports Hero's/ Superstars". The whole commercialized business. To me it 's expensive entertainment, with nothing to come away from with except empty pockets, while you line the pockets of these "entertainers" and their managers. If I as a business owner treated my potential or existing clientel with such irreverence and disdane I'd be broke by now.
However I didn't come away with nothing. Jake had a great time, it was cool to watch a live game, he was awe-struck by the stadium , the Jays won and he got a new ball cap.
The high light for me was of course my son's enjoyment, but also to make a short story long ...
The NY team was accompanied by several NYC police officers
who had a box in the middle deck, when their presence was announced, and their pictures appeared on the Jumbo-tron the crowd went wild with exilleration and praise, an almost complete standing ovation from the assembled 20,000 fans( Canadian and American alike. Now that impressed me!
No booing, no retoric and alot of humility.
Carl
I share your feelings toward the over paid, primadonas of the professional sporting ranks.
Do I blame the players for demanding the outrageous salaries that they do? No.
Do I blame the owners for paying the outrageous salaries that they do? Yes.
As they pay them, we pay more for every thing from a Coca Cola to Cars.
Why do a pair of Nike's cost $200.00 bucks, could all the sports team they sponsor be part of it? You bet. This is also true on the collegiate level.
When a Utilities company puts its name on a sports arena does the cost of their goods go up.
I know that since I moved to So. Fla., I can't purchase enough of the products offered by The Pro Player Company.;)
Who the heck are they? Somebody knows and they are paying more for their goods or services.
I am personally offended that we are taken for such idiots that we will continue to support all this money grubbing.
How about Comerica park, any of you run out and open a savings account with them, because they paid to have their name on a baseball stadium?
And lets not forget the fact that the cheap part is the tickets. Buy a family of 4, a hot dog, coke, program and a souvenier. Add another $5. to $10. for parking. Now kiss a couple of hundred bucks good bye.

I may have said this here before, but for the life of me I cannot understand why athletes are considered heros. What the HELLhas some clown who can run, pass, catch, hit, kick, throw or skate done to deserve this respect?
I suspect they have been granted this status by the advertising agencies of the products they shill for.
The players in Toronto may be rude and inconsiderate because they really don't want to be there. Why? Because of the exchange rate. I do not say this to justify their behavior, it's just my supposition, but if I'm correct they are dead wrong.
As far as the amount of money they make I really couldn't care less. Everything Chip said is true and that may well be why minor league baseball is alive and well. This year in the metro NYC area, there are now four professional minor league teams operating. Long Island Ducks (Yeaaa!) Brooklyn Cyclones, Staten Island Yankees, and John's team, the Newark Bears.
Admission $8-9 and sold out for the season. Small stadiums, 6-7,000 seating and close enough to the field you can talk to the players
BTW, Chip what is it with pro baseball in Florida neither team can make it go?

I just watched 60 Minutes, they did a segment about Canadian Immigration. From what your officials said a person can arrive in Canada, claim refugee status and 90 minutes later they are in the country to stay with full health, schooling and welfare benefits. Even the great State of California (;)) is not that generous. How do you folks afford it?
I can't speak for Tampa, but my guess is they haven't put a decent product (team)on the field.
But In So. Fla. the Marlins won the world series in 97' and immediately dismantled the team. Now Jefferey Loria, you remember him he had all the talent in Montreal and continually let it go away. He is the owner of the Marlins.
There is also trouble finding an agreeable site for a new stadium!?!
Can anyone explain why we have to build these Billionaires new stadiums, so their Millionaires can play games, and charge us Hundreds of dollars per event to have the priveledge of watching them in our stadiums.
In Detroit Mr. Ford, you may recognize the name, was unhappy that the agreement with the City of Pontiac, wouldn't give him the parking and concession rights to the stadium that they built for him.
He evidently was unhappy with the deal he had with the Tiger Stadium folks prior to that.
So now the good folks of Pontiac will be left with a 80,000 seat, domed tractor pull house.
When the Bill Ford's of the world say jump, the politicians say how high.
Bill Ford needs money? Come on!!!

Hey, Flatfloor, Looks like you like the LI Ducks. I work in the court building across from the stadium in CI. Sadly (for me), I have yet to get to a game (isn't that typical though-so close and never getting to the attraction), though I hear they are great. I'll get there this season, if tickets are available.

Courthouse, hmm, I have these two traffic tickets which are really a big mistake, I don't suppose you could........;)
BTW, as long as we are talking about courthouses what do you think of the new Federal Courthouse? From the Southern State it looks like the most God awful Architectural monstrosity. Makes Stony Brook Hospital almost look acceptable.
Better get over there for tickets soon, last year they sold out before the season started.

At one time we had a minor league hockey team on LI called what else...the Ducks. They played in an old cold arena with chain link instead of plexiglass and we knew all the players, lotsa funny stories, Bull Durham and Slapshot rolled into one. John Muckler (NHL coach and GM) is a Duck graduate, John Brophy made it as well as coaching the Maple Leafs. Supposedly Brophy was the model for the main character in Slapshot, I believe it, I know him.

Hockey is great- in another year or two, both Jack and Jacob will be on teams...Mackinaw just built an indoor rink, so at least I won't have to freeze while cheering them on...

Know nothing about hockey, but in answer to Art's question about why we have to build stadiums for billionaires, what else would we do with our money? Build infrastructure -- mass transit, more roads? That's no fun.
In Houston we kicked the Oilers out because they were bums and among other things, they wanted a new stadium. The Astrodome wasn't big enough for them, even though they could never sell out a game there.
What do we do? We are in the process of completing a new state of the art stadium for an expansion team. (Texans)
We build a new downtown stadium for the Astros because they no longer like the Astrodome. These suckers can't buy a pennant. Closest they ever came was more years ago than I can remember when the Mets beat them out of a shot at the World Serious (sic). They're playing about 400 ball so far in this season, and it STILL costs five bucks for a cup of beer.
Houston Rockets (basketball) won't play in their venue anymore. Want somebody to build them a new arena, (and we will).
Hockey has never been big in the southern states. Let's face it, it's hard to get excited when the outside temp is pushing a hundred. I mean you walk in there in your tank top and skivvies and, hell, you freeze your butt off. :D
Why did you people have to get me started on this? :(

Texans...y'all expect sooo much from your teams.
Michigan taxpayers get to foot the bill for the Lions'(2-14) and Tigers'(7-16 for 2002) new stadiums.

Sorry, to go back to Flatfloor, but hey you had better pay those tickets, the County coffers need the money!! Besides the police need the money for their salaries. Sorry, I have no influence, BUT If you don't pay-you may be seeing me.ha-ha
I remember the old hockey Ducks. Grew up not too many miles away from the old LI Arena. Used to go there when they had the indoor ice skating for us kids. Remember the old diner across the Jericho Tpke. The Duck players used to go there (some anyway) after a game. God, they were scary looking-no teeth all bruised up!!!! Or is it just what I think I remember????
As for that white UGLY federal building-can't tell you what an eye sore it is. It just doesn't seem to fit in-nothing like making it stand out so the bad guys know which one it is. Need a good architect to plan these things.

You were my last hope, guess I shouldn't have hit the cop. :)
You memory is excellent, they did look like that. I guess they couldn't afford dentures. I remember them from some of the local watering holes. I was only twelve at the time but big for my age. :D
They had to go all the way to Chicago to find the architect for that courthouse.

Well, as they said in the Toronto papers.."hopefully, after the 7th game, both teams will be eliminated"...what a brutal series that was...:(

To our neighbours to the north. It seems the "good citizens" of Detroit were not the only ones guilty of gross misconduct, some LIers were also guilty. We seem to be suffering from a serious lack of courtesy in this country. Thankfully, from what I read and heard, they were a small minority.
