My good friend Jim (estimator for a large VA,MD installation company) went on Friday to get a job ready in a large house in DC (6 bathrooms to tile). One of the shower pans was already "completed" by the plumber. Or not completed, depending on how you look at it. No pan liner on the curb, just the wood framing showing. (That is not a surprise-many guys around here just use Ultra set over the mud bed and wood curb and take it to the drain) And the best part was that the roughly 8 sq foot shower floor was filled with...................

self leveling compound!

Jim said the floor had the slightest of slopes...maybe an 1/8" from the wall to the center. He estimates the pour was about 1 1/2" thick.

So, anything we should know about this new technology? Are you developing a new line of SSSFC's? (slightly sloping shower floor compounds). Please let us know if we should be getting rid of our hoes, mud boxes and wheelbarrows. :)

Beats the hell outta me :) Like I've said before some of the things that are done with SLCs I don't want to know about.

Do you have plumbers who work with Mud?

Did the plumber pour the SLC?

Does that mean that they could possibly install a pre slope, under the pan liner?

Naw!!!! Not in this life time.

I have a friend who is a plumbing contractor. A few years ago he was in a bind to get a shower put back together and asked me to do it. I'd never seen his work before. I'm expecting utter garbage.

The vinyl pan he'd done was a piece of art. The pre-slope was perfect, the folds in the corners of the pan were glued and impecable. The rough curb had been done perfectly. The entire area had been cleaned up with a shop vac. The guy is an artist, I tell you.

I've never done another job for him. Haven't been able to fit him in. :D

See what I mean John? You can't trust anybody. :D

BTW, that has to be one expensive shower pan, not to mention SLCs are not meant to be used in areas that are constantly exposed to water.

"SLCs are not meant to be used in areas that are constantly exposed to water."

Thanks for the timely information. Got some tear-out to do. ;)

Juan, now I can't speak for your friend the plumber, nor should I venture to dare your truth, but... If I was a plumber, asking for a favour, I'd sure make sure that things were the way they were supposed to be.

On the other hand, at least he knew how to do it, eh? But as I've said before, he probably charges $100 hr and you'd probably do it for 40, right? ;)
