Hi guys. Have a question regarding travertine in a new construction home. My tile setter says it will be fine to lay 16" x 16" travertine tiles over a 3/4" OSB subfloor which is on 16" centers (the joists are 2 x 10 pine). He has spread 1/8" versabond over the subfloor and nailed 1/4" hardibacker down approx every 8 inches. Does this combonation seam adequate enough for Travertine. I am used to having porcelain tiles. Thanks

Well, the subfloor is not good for travertine. It needs to be 1-1/4" thick, not counting the backerboard.

What's the unsupported span of the joists?

Max span is 14 feet. Some areas will have spans of 10 feet.

Where the joists are 14 feet, you'll have to either reduce the span with a support beam, or double them.
