As you may or may not know, we have a house full of dogs. When we returned after 4 months away taking care of MIL and my bastard sisters we found that Tabtabaii, our elder statesman had a serious ear infection. A trip to the vet cured it. In one month it came back thrice each time worse than before, and last night, we ended his pain. He will be missed.
It is a salutory lesson in the meaning of treatment and healing. Had we continued treating him it would have been for our sake not his.

Jeremy, Sorry to hear about your loss. I agree, you made the right decision. We lost one of our 16 year old cats last spring. Hated to lose him, but he had a grand life. We buried him in one of the islands in our yard amongst the azaleas, rhododendrons and dogwoods.

Sorry about your loss Jeremy. We have a 9 year old Pomeranian and just yesterday my daughter was talking about how much a part of the family he is. She said she couldn't imagine life without him. Sometimes he drives me nuts, and I'd like to imagine it though... kidding :D
my youngest daughter still sayes that loosing our golden about 10 years ago was the saddest day in her life.. shes 18 now

Isn't it amazing how attached you can become to a pet?
We left a stray cat back in Mexico that my daughter had nursed back to life during the year we spent there. She'd only had the cat around for about 4 months but it was enough to build that bond. She named her Ellie and it was heart breaking to watch her say goodbye. We were driving back from there so her dad did not want the hassles of a kitten. Up to this day she reminds him of how mean he was toward her beloved Ellie:cry:

I'm so sorry as well, Jeremy. Our corgis are 15 1/2 and almost 11 yrs old. Max, the master of the house, is blind and deaf and was diagnosed with cancer 3 yrs ago but he's still with us. I say he doesn't want Shelby, his daughter, to inherit all of his stuff when he goes. :D It's true. He really doesn't like her very much. But I also think he's hanging around because he knows how much we'll miss him when he's gone. :( Geez. Now I've made myself cry. Doing the right thing for Tabtabaii was really brave, Jeremy. I hope I can be as brave as you when the time comes.

Before I took him to the vet, Tab went for a walk along the beach with three of his housemates. Little guy was really perky and displayed no indication he was in pain.
If it wasn't for the damned infection he was as fit as a butcher's dog.
But.... the infection was so bad that it actually stank up the house. And being fungal it was contagious.
M has yet to forgive me.
I just hope Tab has.
