Well folks, it was bound to happen eventually. My Chevy's transmission crapped out today.Didnt strand me, left me with 1st and reverse so she made her home to weigh my options and then back in to the GM dealership.
I know, the dealerships going to cost more right.Right.1900.00 total vs 1500 everywhere else.
Everywhere else is 7-10 days,GM dealership will have me back on the road Thursday afternoon.
In the meantime my Brother in law Loaned me one of his 3/4 ton Chevys so I can deliver the materials to mt 1750 s/f job which starts Monday.Ive got a shower rough in to do also so it looks like i'll be working the weekend to get caught up.
On the brite side, they do take American Express,Dont leave home without it!!! :D

Better get a FORD! :yipee:
Todd,
My brother is a trans re-builder (private shop). All the dealers in the area send the work to him. If you take it to a dealer, you will see it parked in front of a local trans shop the next day.
He can do it for about half what the dealers charge, but he don't take American Express.:D
I got a GMC. All trucks have their problems, but he says they wouldn't be in buisiness if it weren't for Ford. Sorry Mike. :)

I wonder why? Maybe because it's the best truck in the US and there's more Fords on the roads!

There are lemons in every make of vehicle, but I gotta say-- the only one I ever had problems with was also the only vehicle I bought brand new, and that was a 77 F100, when I was in the navy. Within 50,000 miles I replaced the tranny twice (albeit the lightest tranny ford had at the time-- a C-3), and that's when I traded it in for a Trans Am. (I wonder if it had anything to do with the fact that when the truck was running, the gas pedal was usually matted? :D )

Have to say that I've had good luck with my Ford trucks, and the only chevy I had ate up rear ends. 84 f250 (8600 gvw version) 300 inch 6 with low geared 4 speed got nearly to 300,000 miles before a dumb s**t kid stole it and totaled it out. Hauled lots of heavy stuff including weighed loads of over 5000 lbs from Texas to California twice. Only drive train problem was striping out the fiber timing gear at about 180,000 miles, so replaced it with a steel one, and put in new cam and lifters at the same time.
Drive a 2000 model f-450 diesel now. (have had 11,000lbs on it) Figure it should last the rest of my working years. :yipee: :yipee:

I had a 1982 6.2 diesel chev scottsdale long wheelbase loved driving it but hated owning it it used to eat starter motors, the 4 sp auto is a dog its long gone replaced by a good reliable toyota. :)

The dealership had it apart yesterday.Theres a wiring harness inside the transmission that went to hell. They hope to have it done this afternoon(we shall see) I'll say this, they got ambushed on the harness(they didnt expect that) but they found one and had it sent overnight so it should arrive before 11AM today.
Ive had this truck for 3.5 years and have put 75,000 miles on it.
Repairs ive done include
1 serpentine belt
1 ball joint
1 radiator.
That was it until this tranny.
The 350 motor is still strong and will make 300,000 easy.
2000.00 for a tranny is still cheaper than a new truck last time i checked ;)
Besides, I love this truck, its never given me reason to cuss it and has never ever stranded me.Even when the tranny went it left me with 1st and reverse :D

:bang: CHEESEHEADS!!! :bang: :bang: :bang:
I bought my diesel 2 1/2 years ago because Diesel fuel was cheaper than gas, now it's higher than super unleaded, I think someone is getting rich and it ain't me. 21 MPG is nice, just turned 110,000 miles.

Speaking of Fords, since Mike was going to give me his truck, I'll pass on the graditute to you Todd. I have an "89 Ford 150 that you can have FREE........Only problem is that's its missing the grill, front bumper, driver side fender, rad, rad support, cowling, headlights, tailgate, tires are all done, I think it need some steering work............lets see.............I've almost got the steering box off of it..cab corners need to be patched, and theres a hole in the floor that you could drop a beer bottle through................anywho...........yours......FREE........ :)
The parts that are missing you can also have but then you'd have to purchase my beast that I'm still driving..........392,000 KMS (thats 243,000 miles) and hungry for more........It seems to run better after the accident........not sure waht thats all about....... :uhh:
And remember...........if your ever stuck on the side of the road.........or trying to pull a really really heavy load................call upon a Ford owner............we will be there! :yipee: :)

We fill fords with tile and when they bottom out we lift the whole works, truck and all and drop it on the back of Mine so i can get the delivery actually accomplished.:)
Thanks for the offer Randy, the 89 3/4ton chevy my Bros in law loaned me for a couple days seems to work just fine.In fact, if it didnt have a plow on the front and a manual shift i'd almost feel at home seeing as its otherwise near identical to mine.
Tranny couldnt be rebuilt.had to get a remanufactured so it will be done tomorrow. this one comes with a 3 year 50,000 mile warranty and a hefty price tag.3000.00 complete
American Express, dont leave home without it :D

So explain to me why my niece borrows my freelander and gets 600 Kilometers out of a tank of gas yet I can only gat 300, but no matter who drives M's 5.4L Triton V8 we all get the same milage and it is still better than my freelander?

Todd-- if you were going to go the whole route, you should have seen about the possibility of converting your truck to take one of the new Allison transmissions-- good stuff. :)

Okay, I've held off as long as I could. I'm gonna have to side with Musky Mike on this. Driving a 99 F250 (V10), and not only is this the best truck I've ever owned, It's the best truck I've ever RIDDEN in. Granted, it is a hog when it comes to gas, but man, can you ever load this thing up. Put about 2000 - 2200 lbs of tile in it, no sweat. You almost don't even know you have a load on it.

89 Chevy 3/4 ton-- it's carried as much as 4000 pounds of marble, granite and tools through the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire and never said no. She might have cried a little, but she kept right on going.

Yeah, I forgot about hills (we ain't got any mountains), and I even have to go to Central Louisiana to find a hill. This truck does not like the hills too much when the trailer is on it.

All right Raymond!! That's what I have except the V8. Todd you don't know how much this is going to degrade me telling you this but I just had something go out on my tranny about 3 weeks ago. Well being without a truck for 3 days and a grand later pretty much sucked  . Then the alternator went out. Then today I had to get a jump because the battery went bad . I don't know if the tranny went because I hauled about a ton and a half of stone back from Colorado at 85 mph for 20 hrs straight or it's one of those sabatage things in newer trucks. Runnin' like a champ now. :yipee: And I still love my truck!

My chevy doesnt hold as much weight as it used to.the springs are getting a bit weak.I'm down to about 3000-3200 lbs.Over that makes me nervous.2 years ago 4000 didnt make me nervous.
I got my truck Back.
Total damages 3245.00 for the remanufactured 4 L80 heavy duty tranny and a few misc seals etc.3 year 50,000 mile warranty take some of the sting out of it,not much but some :(
And yes, i still love my truck!!!
I figure i'll run her another 16 months or so and then get a new Chevy work truck.Hopefully i can find a 97-99 for around 7-9000.
I'm surprised y'all aren't going Diesel, everyone else is. Normally if you have good power, your mileage sucks. If you have good mileage, your power sucks. Get both with a diesel, any of them. :)

Todd, glad you got your truck back. I know that's a miserable feeling when you are truckless.
Davy, love to have one. Was looking for one when I found this one. Had a dealer/friend looking for me.Called me up and told me about it, said I didn't want it, had to be a diesel, he said you gotta see this truck, I can get it right. Went to look at it and try it out and said I'll take it. Too good of a deal to pass up. Still looking for a diesel though.
I like the Dodge/Cummins set up but the Chevy and Fords are good too. I think the engines will outlast any of the three trucks if taken care of. The diesels are more expensive to buy but will get you more at trade in. If you drive them longer than the 100,000 mile warranty they are more expensive to work on than a gas engine. The Allison trans in the Chevy is probably the best automatic transmission although they have had some minor problems with them. They keep boosting the power on the engines that it's hard for a automatic to hold up. I like my standard six speed, fighting the clutch isn't as bad as the old trucks, not as stiff. :)

Davy, now you are speaking a language I hardly understand (mechanics, sheepish to say). Was looking to find a 99 or 2000 diesel F250 or 350 for 21 or 22000 (3 years ago), when my friend said $15500 for this one, had to get it. Still rather have the diesel, but this truck will get up and go, loaded or not.

Hi Guys :)
Thought I'd join in. Like Todd I'm a diehard Chevy fan. Went through some stuff during my divorce several years ago, and landed in a Escort wagon. Oh my, what a jump!
After being escorted around (:D), I had a 94 E350 Econoline Cargo Van pointed at me. Had a 4.9 six in it, with 188k miles. Price was right, so I grabbed it. At about 225k, I was told the trans was shot. Took it to the trans shop, and they said it was the motor. Wound up being bad plug wires, so the $1,700 repair turned to less than $100. :yipee:
Last year, finally bought a new Chevy Express Access Van (3500). Got a 6 liter, and when you push the gas it goes (empty or loaded)! Had it two months (after waiting 10yrs to buy new again), a kid runs a redlight & broadsides me. Totals his car, and I drive away with over $7k damage.
Anyway, all fixed, running great, and now the gas guage acting up. Glad I bought the no deductible 100k warranty.
Almost bought a utility box van, but didn't like the overhang on the sides. Looked at diesels, but by the time the difference in price to pay for the extra fuel, it's time to buy again anyway.
BTW, kept the Ford. It's a great hauler, don't have to empty the Express, but the 4.9's mileage is worse than the Vortec 6.0. I love them access panels! :yipee:
Ok, done ramblin!
