View Full Version : Smoking
In the last few weeks, I've gone to work for a flooring company. 20 odd years of being self employed has now come to an end. It certainly is different, but it's ok..I can live with the change..and the weekly paycheck(I hate chasing people for money) :bang:
BUT....could the crew I work with smoke anymore? I mean they are NEVER without a smoke in their mouths. You'd think in this day and age, people would know better. I'm either going to die from second hand smoke, or by the hands of the other guys who are tired of hearing me complain about the smoking :laugh2:

Speaking of smoking what really pisses me off about tile guys that smoke think my water bucket is an ash tray. You dont want to know how many times I have had to go to the truck and get " BIG RED " ( the 7 ft level I call her). And wave it at people putiing butts in my water bucket. Thats very nasty . I smoke cigars and never on the job after work or after dinner but never leave a mess for someone to pick up.

Bri, don't get down,we all get tired of endless callbacks, ripoffs, bargain hunters, late night paperwork and chasing money. I agree about the ciggy butts, luckily i got with the builder, and smoking is forbidden inside new construction houses, case closed. :)

I teach my guys the following.
Commercial sites-OK to smoke.Butts go in your pocket or in the trash bucket
Residential Sites.Smoke outside.Butts go in your pocket. If i see a butt on the lawn or in someones driveway, you'll have a week at home to think about the amount of care people give to thier Yards and home and why its not a good idea to disrespect someone else's environment!!
Bri, Sorry to hear your surrounded by people who dont respect your right to clean air.Its those people who have made things rough for smokers everywhere and those folks who make it worse everyday.

Bri, what was it that Steve Martin said back in the 70's?
When asked: "Mind if I smoke?"
Steve said: "Mind if I fart?"
Have you tried that approach? :)
I blame it on the dog. ;)

Same here. Even if the homeowner smokes, I'll go outside. It's just common courtesy, as well as picking up the butts after yourself.

Not naming names, a tilesetter was accused of starting a house fire with his cigarette. Tile company has since disallowed any smoking on site! :yipee:

Years ago I worked with a guy that started 3 different house fires. He was best friends of the owner so he didn’t get fired. He liked to use his propane torch to soften linoleum for those tricky cuts. After the third fire the boss bought him a hot air gun. He told me this story when I asked him why everyone called him “torch”.

Dang. I wish there were more trades people like you, Todd. :) If there were, maybe our master bedroom remodel/addition wouldn't have been such a nightmare. And maybe, after ten years, we wouldn't still be finding trash buried in our yard and encased in our walls. :bang: :bang: Your clients are very lucky!

No sympathy for you Dude. The guys on my crew smoke dope. Somehow they believe that tiling is better stoned. I wish they would switch to cigarretes.

On my crew, that'll get you fired-- first time, no warnings. As a matter of fact, I did just that two summers ago-- to my partner's brother-- caught him smoking a joint in a customer's driveway, and he was gone. No second chances. That crap has NO place on a jobsite.
