Ok, Ok! It's me. I have been fishing in the PMTT (Professional musky tournement trail) and my partner and I caught a 42 1/2" musky at lake Minnetonka last week. We qualified for the championship which is to be held at Lake Chautauqua New York Oct 16th and 17th. A chance to win a Ranger boat and 20 grand. The top 50 teams that qualified are going. Also for any of you that are in the area there's going to be a musky show in Jamestown that weekend too. To check out the results look at www.promusky.com. They did miss spell my last name. I'll get it fixed. I'm leaving next week. Can't wait!! :yipee: :yipee: :yipee: See and you wonder why they call me Musky Mike :yeah:

Muskies look like a cross between a Pike and a Stergeon? Do you eat 'em or are they a sport fish?

Hey Mike-- that's a helluva fish, for sure. That's one thing I've never caught, is a muskie. There are only 2 or 3 lakes here in Maine that have em, and as you'd probably guess, there aren't too many bass in those lakes. :D One other thing-- I didn't know muskies went as far south as Kentucky! I thought they were stricktly a northern fish, like pike.

I was the first pic Mike! Shaughnn most musky guys catch and release. I suppose you could eat them but it makes me cringe! A fish that big is 10 to 15 years old. And a musky is just a musky. There is a hybrid musky that's a cross between a female northern and male musky. It's called a tiger musky. Every hybrid is born sterile. The DNR has a fish hatchery in Spooner which is about ten miles from my house where they have stocking programs around the state.
Bill, muskies are stocked from different conservation depts. all over the midwest, however Kentucky is about the furthest south they go. Muskies don't thrive in warm water too well. As far as Colorado to Maine and Canada to Kentucky. There are even lakes in Missouri. Next Year the PMTT is having one of the tourneys there. Yeah I'll be there.
Davestone first place was two fish 42" and a 51". They were locals.
Davy, I don't think lippin 'em is a good idea. Their teeth are like razors, I've gotten raked several times by their teeth and let me tell ya it hurts! Sort of like a fresh water barracuda. Top predator in the lake.
As for anyone else, these fish are the hardest fish in the world to catch. There was alot of people in the whole tour that never even caught a fish. These things happen you just have to be in the right spot at the right time. There are alot of people who have been fishing for muskies for years and never caught one. I guess I've been lucky.

Mike-- this is in reference to your mentioning their sharp teeth, so bear with my being long winded. :) Years ago, when I was a senior in high school, I worked with Connecticut DEP as part of a work study program, being that at the time, I was going to major in Marine Biology in college. I worked with a guy who now is the Chief fisheries biologist for Ct. (Bob Orciari), and one of the things he was trying to do was start a pike spawning marsh off one of the lakes in our region (for those in here from Connecticut, Lake Lillinoah). There'd already been a successful spawning marsh project done on another lake to the north of our region (Bantam Lake), and we went up to see exactly how it was done one day, and spent the day on the lake with that region's biologist. They had several box traps set up at the north end of the lake by some heavy reed beds, and every morning they were hitting the traps and cleaning them out. They'd take the pike back to the marsh, where they took scale samples (to figure the age of the fish), weighed them, measured them, and then threw them into the marsh to spawn. Well, there was one pike that was small in comparison to some of the pike they logged this one day-- only about 26 inches-- when my "boss" went to put the fish on the measuring board, it went psycho-- started flipping all over the place, so one of the others gave it a whack over the head to calm it down. Anyway, my boss put it back on the measuring board and got its measurement, and as he was measuring the fish, saw some blodd coming out by the fish's gills. They decided to throw it into the marsh anyway, in the hopes that he'd recover. Well, they brought the next fish up, and noticed blood again. My "boss" turned his hand over only to find it had been splayed open from an inch into the index finger, diagonally across his palm about 1 1/2" into his wrist, which took almost 50 stitches to close up. He never felt a thing-- that fish's teeth were that sharp, and other than markings, and size, there's no difference between them and muskies, so I can vouch for what you're saying-- you NEED to have a good healthy respect for what those fish can do.

OUCH!! What's really scary is sticking your hand into their mouths to cut hooks, some of their teeth are 1/2" long!!

Yet another reason I don't go pike or musky fishing.

Took my wife fishing awhile back, and hooked a large garfish about 15 minutes after we started. Well, these fish have some pretty wicked looking teeth, and this one had two treble hooks flopping around, too. Somehow, while rasslin' around with this bad boy, the treble hooks ended up in my leg, as the fish went over the side. She turned around glaring, and said "I guess you want to go home". I said "of course not, dear". So, we fished the rest of the day, careful not to hang those hooks on anything, and when we got home we pulled them out. You wouldn't believe how elastic the skin on your leg is.
Anyhow, whenever I try to tell anybody about my war wounds and the ordeal of removing the hooks, she rolls her eyes like you wouldn't believe. Takes all the fun out of my story, every time.

NO I didn't forget about hunting season especially musky hunting, this is the best time of the year to catch BIG ones. I usually don't climb into a tree until the end of the month or the first week in Nov. Best time for the rut. As for the ducks and geese, I don't hunt those. Is so I just shoot of my porch, they're flying over all the time. It's called Redneck hunting.

Last summer, friend of mine came over, his hand bandaged up, asked what happened?, he went fishing on his boat, he was alone, caught a bluefish, for those who fish fresh water, this is a saltwater fish that gives one hell of a fight, anyway he used a spoon with treble hooks on it, when removeing it from the fish it jumped sending one of the hook barbs right through his finger and out the other side, to boot, the fish was still hooked, he stould in the boat holding the fish tight and yelling like it seemed forever till someone passed and came over, they cut the hook and slid it out of his finger, OUCH.:)
fished sat. morning for Salmon running the river, spent the PM. up in my tree stand. Heading back North today to take a group of ten after the salmon..LIFE IS GOOD!!!! (then to top it off ,a box of cigars just showed up on my desk)

Eric, I've got to get over your way for some salmon fishing and cigars. ;)
I have to tell my muskie tale. This was when I was about 15.:)
My Mom and Dad and I were on Lake St. Clair walleye fishing and it was slow. I got bored pulling weeds off my crawler harness so I put on an orange flat fish. I hooked a crawler on the rear treble and liked the way it wiggled so I casted it out and let it sink. Felt a big "thunk" and set the hook, but didn't feel much of anything. I started to reel it was heavy, but not much action so I figured I had a walleye and about 10 lbs of weeds.
At about 5 feet it became visible and was long and green, so I thought I was right about the weeds. At about 3 feet we saw it was a Muskie. My mom freaked because they are such a nasty looking fish and it was huge. It took off and started jumping. I don't remember exactly, but it jumped at least twice and then dove. I fought it for about 20 minutes on my lightweight walleye rod and got it back to the boat.
It was just floating there along side the boat completely whipped. My Dad had our little bitty walleye net in his hand and told me he'd do his best. :) He scooped and lifted but there was more out of the net than in, and it's tail hit the windshield. He fell back in, broke my line and swam away lazily.
I don't know how big it was, but I bet it was over 40". I sat and shook for about 10 minutes after that. What a day, I'll never forget it. :)
