Just checked my cable connection speed results:

Your raw speed was 1056750.53 bits per second.
There are 3 meaningful ways we can interpret this number:
Communications

1.1 megabits per second
How communication devices are rated. Kilo means 1,000 and mega means 1,000,000. Examples include 56k modem and 10Mbit Ethernet
Storage

129 kilobytes per second
The way data is measured on your hard drive and how FTP programs measure transfer speeds. Kilo is 1,024 and mega is 1,048,576.
1MB file download

7.9 seconds
The time it would take you to download a 1 megabyte file at this speed

did this at http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/

Nice Jim you sound like a geek.

you sure you did'nt mean to name this thread "bored"..j/k

It has mostly been slower in the last few days now that I think about it.

Funny thing this mourning my cable was so slow that the pages NEVER loaded...no page would load..I started to think I did'nt pay the bill at first till I saw small remnants of pages loading.

Maybe the weather messed of a router somewhere me and you are sharing. Wonder if the west coast guys have the same problem.

Nice Jim you sound like a geek.

Should I take that as a compliment?

All I did was copy and paste my test report, now I need to have it translated.

I'll just use smaller smilies to speed things up...

Jim, that did sound impressive.

The site definitely responds differently at different times. (Hey, I sound like one'a them engineers, eh?)

It's definitely not the same as it was under the old regime, but sometimes it's fairly quick. Maybe that's not always the site. Maybe it is. Sometimes I can judge it against another site that's always running and it seems slower. Sometimes not. Maybe I don't have any idea what the hell I'm saying here. Pretty strong case could be made for that most of the time, logged on or not.

Jim:

I definitely thought JC was giving you the large compliment when I read that. I think you should be honored.

JC
03-05-2002, 06:50 PM
Yup it was a compliment..but now that it was just cut/paste I might need to take it back..huh? dang I really should start reading stuff better.

It sounds pretty slow, did you do any cable tweaks?

Remember though that speed from that web site is a relavant term. Every web site is differant(due to geographic location and varius factors) so the test really can't tell you if you are fast per say, but alot of times you can us it for comparisn before and after testing.

Try some tweaks then try it again. Let me test mine. it has been a slug lately now that I talked all the nieghbores into getting cable..

Don't be playa hating Jim, remember you are probably in a more urban area thus there are more folk on your cable node slowing you down.

Is it me, or have things come back to life?

John Bridge

We have two computers in this house, wired to the same DSL router. For about a 5-day period both computers were downloading at a snails pace.

I, of course, got hold of the host. They said no problem.

I got hold of Dave B., who is up to his neck in his own business. Didn't want to wait for him.

Last night my son and I disconnected some things to try to figure out what was going on. We disconnected the router and plugged a computer directly into the dsl modem. Made no difference at all.

We uninstalled Norton, thinking that might be slowing things down. No help.

I resolved that when I got home today I was going to get hold of the phone company, with whom we have the dsl.

BUT, when I turned on my computer this morning everything worked super fast, as it should when connected via dsl. My son's machine works equally well. I think it had to be something beyond the walls of my house. That's as far as I've gotten on this.

Now, are you folks still having problems? Keep in mind that the board does have slow spells depending on how much action that particular server is experiencing at the moment. But are you still having the really slow spells constantly?

You see, I think the whole problem has been with the server, and that people have been lying to me when I call. I think that somehow last night somebody got something fixed. And I think that somehow whatever it was was dragging down my home network.

Anyway, I hope things are working better. Before long we will start archiving the really old stuff. That should speed things up a little.

And, I'm under pressure to add more boards. That won't speed anything up. ;)

jlbos83
03-07-2002, 06:41 PM
I think it was outside, but I don't think it finished getting fixed til this afternoon, pretty late. It is flying, now.
When my DSL service changed from one provider to another (shouldn't have even noticed), it took three weeks to convince then that my end was ok (had no service at all), even though I hadn't changed anything, and had the same problem on both operating systems that I had running (same computer). They just don't like to admit that they can be wrong!

Oh yeh that's right.

I have been buried alive for a few days and every time I tried to get in here things were very very slow for a while. Boy is THAT frustrating.

I won't go too far for to long tho John, this just pays too good to lose it.

cx
03-08-2002, 11:31 PM
Well, Jim, I guess a fella can hunt Ibex anywheres he wants to. Never really thought of it that way. We generally have better luck in the Florida mountains in southern New Mexico, but that's prolly just on accounta there's a lot of'em there. Cat Hills'd be a good place to hunt'em too, though. Likely easier, besides. Y'all have any luck?

Kinda like I always sprinkle a little ammonia around my tent when I have to leave a camp in the mountain for some weeks. Tell folks it's to keep out the tigers and elephants. When they snicker, I just ax'em the lass time they remember me havin' a elephant or tiger problem. :D

flatfloor
03-09-2002, 03:44 PM
If I didn't know better I'd think you were doubting me.

Those Cat Hills are some of finest country in the world to hunt those agile, sneaky beasts on the East Coast. My guide Irving has more experience hunting them than anybody in the Sportsman's Lounge. Irving tells me his fondest wish is to actually track one right into their lair to see the bones of their prey. Irving is convinced it was them dragged of his wife seventeen years ago. Took eight years before the insurance man would pay up.

For some reason CX has not been able to load the forum for two days now. I've checked my files and nobody banned him. :D

Shoot him and email if you can help.

JC
03-11-2002, 02:56 PM
Thats odd we have been getting in so I would guess it is not the server.

Has he tried clearing his cache? Or using another browser to acces the page? Enabling or disabling his java stuff?

It could also just be something like a certain router that is in line with Johns site to him is down..we don't use the same router thus it works for us..He did say he is from the backwoods correct?

Not sure what else to tell him on this one other then play around and wait a few days.

Bud Cline
03-11-2002, 03:07 PM
That's what happened to me several days ago. I could pull up the site but nothing worked beyond that. Very slow changing pages, impossible to post.

Other sites were working fine for me. In a couple days it was healed without explanation.

That was about the same time (or just after) John announced he was "tweaking" something so I just figured it was related.

Works great now for me.

John Bridge
03-11-2002, 03:57 PM
Okay, he's still having problems. I told him to clear the cache. He says he does that all the time.

Please email him and give him a little moral support.

cx
03-11-2002, 04:43 PM
Hey, pardner, I don't need no moral support, my morals is just fine thankyouverymuch.

Best we can determine, the problem was actually with my ISP. How can that be, you might axe. Well, I'll tell you - I don't know.

Something about one of their thingies (that's the technical term, I forget the common name he used) that connects us all to the internet. Made me a dial-up connection that specified a particular "secondary" thingy, and it worked - most of the time. He re-booted (technical term is "to kick in the ass", I think) one or more of his thingies, and now I seem to be able to gain access on either dial-up connection. They only discovered this on accounta I have (almost by accident) a stored dial-up to another ISP that belongs to a friend who had to use my computer once when his was kaput (don't know the technical for that one). I dialed into that ISP with stored info, and BINGO, JB loaded right up.

Anyway, looks like I'm baaaaaaak. :D

I miss anything?

John Bridge
03-11-2002, 05:55 PM
Well, why didn't you think of doin' that right off the bat, instead of buggin' me with all those emails? :D

I tole ya, strange things happen with computers hooked to the web.

Yeah, you missed a bunch of stuff. :)

cx
03-11-2002, 09:02 PM
Well, see, I would have, 'cept it was onna weekend and my ISP provides tech service only during the hours my bank lobby is open, so this morning (after 09:00, thank you) was my first opportunity. Oh, yeah, they still call it tech "service".

Now, John, aren't you sorry you yelled at me? And hurt my feelings? And tried to make everybody else feel sorry for you and not me? Well? :(

Rob Z
03-12-2002, 04:07 AM
CX I did understand the "kick it in the ass" part of that story. But, why are we still talkin' about using routers and other woodworking equipment on these frustrating boxes of electrons?

And what's that about clearing out the "cache". That sounds like illegal activity to me.

cx
03-12-2002, 06:45 PM

Cami A

Whatsamatter, cx, were you planning on using steel studs? :D

Oh man Jim that reminds me.

When we lived in Texas we had friends that had moved here (U.S.) from England.

They were funny as hell all the time. Never a good thing to say about one another but in an affectionate way.

They had purchased a new car and it took every penny they could muster to make the deal. They then had to wait to afford the license plates. They went way beyond the allowed thirty days and we used to tease him about it daily.

One evening we were all together and I had noticed they finally had their new plates on their new car. Now they could just barely pay the necessary fees, much less even think about paying for a "vanity plate" which was fairly pricy in Texas at the time. So they "took it as it came" from DMV.

Upon noticing the new tags I said "Well Mike, you finally went without lunch long enough to get your car licensed I see".

Mike Responded, "Yeh Bud, I got Rita (his wife) a personalized plate this year".

It took me a few seconds to get it. I looked at the plate and it was: 000 MUT.

Bud Cline
03-17-2002, 04:56 PM
Well OK. So you had ta been there.

flatfloor
03-17-2002, 05:14 PM
I got a chuckle out of it Bud.

Wonder how that would go ov.....on second thought forget it.

Just remembered a true Texas vanity plate story. Stopped by a customer's office (in NY) in the parking lot was a car with Texas plates - NYPD. Around here that's NY Police Dept. Curious, I asked who's car and what's the story on the plates? New secty said "oh, that's mine I lived down there for a while..initials stand for NY Person in Dallas.
