Renovating my entire 111-year-old house, not necessarily "back to the way it was," because we don't really know what that was, but back to the way I would have like it to be.

I'm looking to purchase a particular floor tile that, if you're around 50 years old, you may remember appeared on many a bathroom floor, or in hallways of old apartment buildings. It was generally white with black accent/border, and was hexagonal. I believe it was probably porcelain, and each tile measured no more than an inch in any direction.

Any clues where I would find something like that? Anyone know that "nostalgic" look I'm talking about?

Stephen

Hi Steven, Welcome! :)

I'm familiar with the look you're talking about. American Olean carries the 1" porcelain hexagon tiles you are referring to.

The tile-shop.com link was the best, and exactly what I had in mind. Thank you both for your help. :yipee: Now I have to find a vendor for the tile. I live in Long Island NY, and know of an area on New York City's Lower East Side where I can probably find it.

Thanks again!

Port Jeff. I bought a house 4 years ago in the heart of the village, right across from Theatre Three (know it?). Been wanting to live here for 15 years and was finally able to afford it.

We tackled our own tile work for the first time in our old house in Selden, doing a kitchen counter in regular 4 x 4 bathroom-type white tile. Made a lot of mistakes, but didn't think it would be too difficult to do it right. So, we recently redid a bathroom, tiled it top to bottom (well, 2 feet from the top to leave room for some great wallpaper) with the help of a cheap wet saw we bought at Home Depot. Turned out to be one of the best things we ever bought. The bathroom came out just great.

We just recently completed the entire 2nd floor, giving us a great living space (there's a second kitchen) so that we could "break ground" on the first floor. We're having a new front door put in soon, so that's the beginning. Last week we tore up the hallway walls and removed a bathroom that had been added in the '40s, which gives us a center foyer with a hallway direct to the kitchen at the back of the house (right "through" where the bathroom was, which we ripped out last week). We want to use this old-fashioned hex tile in the foyer and down the hall, possibly continuing into the kitchen with a different treatment (maybe some color), but similar. Very excited about the work ahead of us, even though it'll take the rest of my life!
