We just put a matte finish rough porcelain tile in the bathroom. Do we absolutely need to seal it? My finace, who is generally very handy but new to tiling, seems to think we bought grout that is already "sealed" but i have my doubts.

p.s. I am the least handy woman on the planet. But after reading some threads on this site I'm thinking of dropping out of the financial/tech industry and becoming a handy-woman. This stuff is riveting!! I might just register...

Hi angefog :)

Handy woman of the planet or not, please register!

I happen to seal matte porcelain tile & the grout. Some sealers are better than others. More important is to keep the floor maintained with proper cleaning products & techniques.

Unglazed porcelain tile contain micro fissures, that collect dirt, and over time darken in the areas of high traffic patterns. I recommend using a quality neutral cleaner (they usually contain dirt surfacants), and changing the water when it becomes cloudy.

Please pass on the name of the "already been sealed" grout.
