View Full Version : Bathtub Ledge - Waterproofing

Great forum! I have been lurking for sometime, but now have a couple of questions.

Our new bathroom will have a tub w/shower head. On opposite end of tub is a 9" ledge/deck that that is a little wider than the tub and is about 2" higher than tub. The ledge and tub surround will be tiled. I am concerned about water on the ledge.

Question: How should this be waterproofed?

Treat that ledge like a shower bench. Build it extra stout, cover with plywood and backerboard, then use a paint-on surface waterproofing membrane like Redgard, or use Kerdi, a waterproofing membrane that is thinset to the walls. If you use Kerdi, you can skip the backerboard.

Do a search for threads dealing with benches.
